About the Middle School
Welcome to Woodward Academy’s Middle School. We are here to instill a joy for learning, to celebrate student creativity and to support each and every student in attaining his or her fullest personal and academic growth. Woodward teachers are committed to making the Middle School an enriching learning environment. Our teachers are extremely talented in their respective disciplines. More than 80 percent of them work with Middle School students outside the classroom in clubs, sports and other activities. Middle School is a time of tremendous growth and change – intellectually, emotionally, physically and socially. Woodward Academy provides opportunities for every student to maximize their individual strengths and develop a sense of self-worth that lasts a lifetime.
The Middle School is located on the five-acre Jordan N. Carlos Middle School campus, which includes four separate buildings. Our main instructional building is the 80,000-square-foot Brand Tucker Hall. This building is LEED-certified (Leadership in Energy and Design), which demonstrates our enduring commitment to the environment and our community. The building itself is a laboratory for learning, with many environmentally friendly principles. The typical classroom contains about 800 square feet of active teaching space which includes such instructional tools as interactive Smart Boards, projection and sound systems and DVD/VCR players. The building has discipline-specific halls and classrooms, four computer labs and nine science labs. The visual arts program is housed in the 2,500-square-foot A. Adair Dickerson Jr. Art Center. The facility includes a drawing studio, painting studio, ceramics room and three kilns as well as an art computer lab equipped with 20 computers with digital monitors and digital pads. The Dickerson building also features an open gallery for displaying student art and for hosting small group gatherings. The building features two patio areas where students may develop their art skills outdoors.
