PE Classes Now In Swimming Unit

The entire Lower School student body is participating in a swimming unit during their PE time, which began last week and will conclude on May 23. All students need to have a dry swimsuit and towel each day as well as goggles and a plastic bag. The students will dress at the locker rooms at the pool. There will not be time for showers, and they will be reminded of this at the start of the unit. We will have instruction four days a week and free swim and dive one day a week.

During this unit, students are across the street at the pool. Please be aware of this should you need to pick up students from school early.

Sign Up for Music and Dance for Current Students

We are now beginning our music and dance registration process for currently enrolled students for rising 4th grade, rising 5th grade and rising 6th grade. As we have done for the past two years, we are asking for you to sign your child up for their music and dance classes before Friday, May 18. You can access the registration forms through your Edline account. After signing in to Edline, click on the “Lower School” from the right column which will take you to the Lower School home page. Under the “News” heading you will find Music Registration 2012-13 and Dance Registration 2012-13. Click on the form, complete it and then submit your registration.

Music choices for 4th grade are strings or chorus. Band is not an option for our rising 4th grade students. For the 5th and 6th grade, music choices are band, strings or chorus.

Students who wish to participate in dance must register for dance. Dance classes meet twice a week during PE class time. Please be aware there is a fee for dance. Also, our dance classes are limited to the number of students. It will be first come-first serve basis. If your child wants to take dance, don’t delay in completing the registration process.

We ask that currently enrolled students complete this process by May 18. After that date, the students who have not registered their choices will be asked to do so in the computer lab during the last week of school. Please discuss their choices with them so they know what class you expect them to be part of for the next school year. You can also click here for music and here for dance.

Upcoming Honors Banquets Information

Our Eagle Award Banquets rewards 5th and 6th grade students whose academic average qualifies them for honor roll status. Gold and Silver Eagle Awards are presented to students who have attained an overall grade point average of 3.2 (silver) or 3.8 (gold). Many students were placed on Eagle Roll following the second grading term; however, that does not mean they will be invited. Several will fall short of the average by fourth term and will not receive an invitation.

To recognize such an outstanding achievement, the student and a few guests are invited to attend the Honors Banquets which are held in the Robert W. Woodruff Dining Hall. The 5th grade banquet will be held on Tuesday, May 22, at 6:30 pm; the 6th grade banquet will be held the following night, Wednesday, May 23, at 6:30 pm. For this occasion, girls are to wear dressy clothes and boys should wear a coat and tie.

There is no charge for this banquet; however, you will be required to make reservations. An email announcement will be sent to you via Edline by May 16. This email will contain a link for your reservation. You must make your reservation through this online form by Monday, May 21, 2012 at 8:30 am. Because we have a large number of recipients, we must limit the number of guests per honoree. The number allowed for 5th grade is three guests, along with the honoree. Sixth grade will be allowed to have two guests, along with the honoree. After the reservation deadline on Monday, if space is available, you will be notified if you have requested more guest seats.

Mentor Families Needed for 2012-2013 School Year

We would like to encourage you to volunteer yourself and your family to serve as a Mentor Family for the 2012-2013 school year. As a Mentor Family, you will help a family new to Woodward by answering their questions and making them feel welcome. While the administration provides the new families with valuable information about many aspects of the Academy, it is nice for the parents to have a resource for questions about uniforms, activities, lunch, camps, etc.

The Mentor Program will be hosting several events during the summer and at the beginning of the school year. Attendance at all of the events listed below is not required to be a Mentor Family.  These events are for the new and Mentor Families and will be fun for the students as well as providing an opportunity for you to meet parents new to Woodward. Serving as a Mentor Family is a rewarding experience. We hope you will participate!

If you have a rising 4th, 5th or 6th grader and are interested in being a Mentor Family, please click here for more information. You can email Brenda Cochran at brenda.cochran@comcast.net or Amy Roberts at collinelle@yahoo.com if you have any questions.

If you have a rising 7th grader, and are interested in being a Mentor Family, please click here for more information. You can email Caryn Boxer at ccboxer@comcast.net or Leslie Haskins at lesliemhaskins@gmail.com if you have any questions.

Summer Reading and Math Packets

The summer reading and math packets for rising 4th through 6th graders are now on the Woodward website at the following addresses:

Reading:  http:// www.woodward.edu/go/reading

Math:  http:// www.woodward.edu/go/math

NOTE: Please be aware that the summer reading is posted online in six different documents. The following will explain what the six are and how summer reading works. Don't worry-- it is a lot simpler than it sounds!

1. The "Introductory Letter."  This letter explains that there is one required book per grade level and that students should read at least two additional books. The two additional books may be anything that the student chooses.
2. A "Suggested Reading List" for 4th-6th grades. These titles are suggested books that students may choose from if they need ideas. However, they are only suggestions--any title they pick is acceptable. The titles do not need to be from this list.
3. The "Summer Reading Record."  This is a reading log the students must complete, get their parents to sign and return when school starts.
4. Study guide for Flush
5. Study guide for Hatchet
6. Study guide for MVP
