  • For novels, students will be using the Kindle App on their iPads. Books should be purchased through Amazon Kindle Store. Please see the Kindle Information page on our website for more information.

Middle School New Student Orientation

All new middle school students will attend an Orientation Day on Tuesday, August 11. Students will meet their teachers, learn about sports and clubs, and participate in middle school activities. More information will be sent home in July.

Middle School Parents Day

The Middle School Parents Day program is on Sunday, August 16. We know you are excited about the opportunity to meet your child’s teachers and hear about their classroom expectations. All MS parents will receive an orientation packet, and an explanation of the day's activities will take place at this time.

In addition, we have provided some optional activities that we feel will be helpful to you as a parent:

  • Administrators and Counselors speak to the parents about the middle school experience.
  • Haiku question and answer session

Parents Day will be held rain or shine! Parents will be traveling to the Campfield Building and Richardson Hall for class visitations. You should bring rain gear if the weather is bad.  This activity is for parents only. We ask that you not bring younger children. Parking is available in any of our campus lots; please do not park on streets with yellow painted curbs.

Mutual benefits accrue when there is meaningful exchange of information between home and school.  Therefore I encourage each and every one of you to attend this special activity. We believe Parents Day can be both informative and entertaining.

About the Middle School

Welcome to Woodward Academy’s Middle School. We are here to instill a joy for learning, to celebrate student creativity, and to support students in attaining their fullest personal and academic growth. Woodward teachers are committed to making the Middle School an enriching learning environment. Our teachers are extremely talented in their respective disciplines. More than 80 percent of them work with Middle School students outside the classroom in clubs, sports, and other activities. Middle School is a time of tremendous growth and change – intellectually, emotionally, physically, and socially. Woodward Academy provides opportunities for every student to maximize individual strengths and develop a sense of self-worth that lasts a lifetime.

The Middle School is located on the five-acre Jordan N. Carlos Middle School campus, which includes four separate buildings. Our main instructional building is the 80,000-square-foot Brand Tucker Hall. This building is LEED-certified (Leadership in Energy and Design), which demonstrates our enduring commitment to the environment and our community. The building itself is a laboratory for learning, with many environmentally friendly principles. The typical classroom contains about 800 square feet of active teaching space which includes such instructional tools as interactive boards, projection and sound systems, and video players. The building has discipline-specific halls and classrooms, five computer labs, and nine science labs. The visual arts program is housed in the 2,500-square-foot A. Adair Dickerson Jr. Art Center. The facility includes a drawing studio, painting studio, ceramics room, and three kilns. The art computer lab is equipped with 20 computers with digital monitors and pads, and a 3-D printer. The Dickerson building also features an open gallery for displaying student art and for hosting small group gatherings. The building features two patio areas where students may develop their art skills outdoors.
