Spanish I:
7th Grade Enriched Prep (7EP)
8th Grade Enriched Prep (8EP)
8th Grade Honors Prep (8HP)
Middle School Spanish is a high school level course. Upon successful completion, students may enter Spanish II in the Upper School.
This two-year Spanish course is designed for Middle School students who begin their language study in the seventh grade. 7EP Spanish is a prerequisite for 8EP and 8HP Spanish. All seventh graders begin at the college preparatory level. Middle School Spanish classes use the same textbooks and follow the same curriculum as the Upper School. However, Middle School Spanish classes move at a slower pace, spreading the coverage of material over a two-year period for greater comprehension and language acquisition. This course introduces students to the Spanish language and culture with an emphasis on speaking, reading, listening, and writing. Course content includes an introduction to basic grammar, including the present and past tenses, a variety of vocabulary, and authentic cultural activities that foster an appreciation of the Spanish-speaking world.
Spanish 8HP is a more advanced, in-depth approach to language learning for those students who excel in Spanish 7P the previous year. Though the curriculum is the same as the Spanish 8EP class, the pace of instruction is faster, and students are required to exhibit more independence and utilize what they learn in class in more realistic, contextual situations. Honors' students are required to do additional reading of authentic Spanish magazines, as well as participate in the National Spanish Exam in the Spring.
