What a Dream!

We cannot believe that the 2012-2013 school year is coming to a close! We have had a wonderful year and enjoyed getting to know you and your children. We started out the year with plans to “Dream” in the Primary School, and that is just what we did! There have been so many fun moments that we cannot possibly list them all in this space; but we want to say “Thank You” for sharing your children with us. Although we are the teachers, we learn from these students every day! There cannot be a more rewarding profession on earth, and we are truly blessed to walk in these doors each morning. Have a restful and fun summer, and we look forward to seeing you in August!
Missy, Eric & Sherry

Lost & Found

All items left in lost and found after this week will be donated to the Consignment Shop.

WA Welcoming Committee

On behalf of the Primary School Administration and the Woodward Academy Parent Community, we would like to invite your family to participate in the Welcoming Committee Program (formerly the Mentor Program) as a Parent Ambassador for the 2013-2014 school year. To streamline the process, parent matching with individual families is being eliminated this year. As a Parent Ambassador, you and your child will serve as valued ambassadors for Woodward Academy. Through planned socials, new families will have the opportunity to learn about the Woodward Academy Primary School from a family who has first-hand experience. You will act as a valuable resource for new families by attending spring/summer socials and answering questions, introducing new families to current Woodward families, and welcoming them into the Woodward Academy community.

Each school division has its own Welcoming Committee chair. For families with rising kindergartners through third graders, Joseph and Jessie Hood (jessierhood@gmail.doc) will serve as the Co-Chairs of the Primary School Welcoming Committee. We hope you will consider volunteering to participate in this important program.

To sign-up to serve as a Parent Ambassador for the Primary School, please complete the PS Parent Ambassador Registration Form.

Vintage Auto Exhibition

Save the date for the Woodward Academy Vintage Auto Exhibition on Saturday, October 5, 2013, from 11am-4pm on Main Campus. If you have a vintage car and are interested in joining the exhibition, please contact Bob Hawks (404.765.4031). More information will be available in the fall.

Wanted: Old Keys

Parents, do you have old keys lying around the house, garage or basement? Old house keys, car keys, skeleton keys---absolutely any kind of keys are wanted. We are collecting old keys to use for projects for our school theme in 2013-2014.  We will have a basket in the lobby for key collection. If you only have a couple to contribute, that is great. The numbers will add up. We appreciate your help with all our projects.

You Can Help Others

Please continue to use your Target REDcard and collect soda tabs, Box Tops, Elmer's glue sticks and the Terracycling items over the summer!  We will post details again in the fall. Thank you for your continuing support with collecting these items; it truly does make a difference!

Summer Balance

I have heard so many parents and children say, “Nothing but fun for me this summer!” I totally understand that sentiment. We are all ready for a vacation. Yet, I have heard other parents say, “I want to keep my kids busy all summer---in reading clubs, in tutorials, in camps, in organized sports-- something to keep their minds and bodies sharp.” I totally understand that as well. We do not want our children to become couch potatoes.  We don’t want their brains to lose the gains they have made this year. However, both philosophies are extreme. Moderation and balance are the keys to a happy and fun summer.
Our children do need a break.  They need time to play, play, play. Play opens up the imagination. It in itself can be a classroom of creativity. But, let us “not throw the baby out with the bath.”  Keeping some of the 3 R’s in summer activities does help the child and make that child better prepared for the next grade. The “education” component can be done in a fun, family inclusive way: board games, reading a book together and writing, drawing, discussing it. You can even act out parts of the book. Taking trips can turn into a total interdisciplinary unit: keeping a photo journal, writing about favorite things, drawing pictures, finding silly names of restaurants, etc.  Road trips in the car are a natural time to practice spelling and math.
“Helping Children Remain in Balance During Summer Vacation” by Lisa Coultrup is a great resource article for parents who want to work on this balance. She says, The three key things children get emotionally while at school during the day are socialization with their peers, a set routine which helps expand their minds and new life experiences to help them grow emotionally and prepare for the future. As parents we need to try and fill each day with a bit of each of these three key points, and we will find that the children and family will be calmer and happier and far less bored. The next question is how do we accomplish this in a summer while trying to take care of our busy day? Luckily it will take very little effort on your part, just some thought and imagination. Here are a few tips on helping the children by building routines at home that are fun and helpful.

Coultrup goes into detail about these three key areas:
Key Number One - Early to bed and early to rise (except on special occasions)
Key Number Two - Eating properly and at the same time
Key Number Three - Set times for reading and quiet time

I hope that all the Primary School children and parents find that magic formula of balance this summer and return for another awesome year at Woodward Academy. Our theme next year is “Primary School Unlocks the Doors of Learning.”

PS Library News

  • Ah . . . TIme to Read and Relax!

    PS Parents -

It is both an honor and a pleasure to teach your student(s) during library-media classes and to assist them in reading selections. The Library-Media Center is a busy place and we hope that your young one finds visiting exciting and inspiring.

The most appealing thing about summer (in my opinion) is the extra time to pursue personal interests, self-development and READing. Please make reading a integral part of your family's summer. A family culture of reading ususally produces avid readers!

Here is a link to the library-media web page where families can find many resources available to them over the summer --

and here is a link to our summer reading list which is a list of suggestions for you and your child to explore --

Follow the Library-Media Center on Twitter @LarisaMcLearns and access more library information online via Edline which links to my blog, The Road to Reading.

Best wishes for a happy, fun-filled summer with lots of time for amazing books!

  • Trueflix and Bookflix: Resources for eBooks & Educational Videos

The Primary School Library is dedicated to providing more book titles and educational content digitally. We have recently acquired a subscription to Trueflix and Bookflix which is accessible at school as well as home, and indeed, anywhere there is Internet access. These online resources also work great on most handheld devices. Here are the remote access links to these sites:

Use the same username and password as Brainpop and Tumblebooks. Again, many students are familiar with the username and password combination, but if assistance is needed, please email Mrs. McMichael or your child's classroom teacher. Try Trueflix and Bookflix today!

  • Soaps for Terranova

Here is a way you can help our sister school in Zambia, Africa! If you have unused soaps, hair conditioners and shampoos, or other small travel items you have collected, they need them. These products are the perfect size for the staff at the Julia Burke Medical Clinic at the Terranova School to hand out to their community.

It may be hard to believe, but in their world, soap is a special thing. Your help will be greatly appreciated and Mr. Dietz (MS assistant principal) thanks you from the kids at Terranova School. Please gather these new items and drop them off at the Middle School front desk.

Historically, Woodward has been one of the largest contributors to this worthy cause. We are proud that we “CAN” make a difference!

  • Students, Principal Donate Hair to Locks of Love

Sixth grader Zoe B., her sister, third grader Mirabel B., and Primary School Principal Missy Duncan Smith recently donated their hair to Locks of Love.
