SUMMER READING BOOK SALE BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND

On May 11, Spring Fling Day, we will have our annual Summer Reading Sale** featuring required summer reading for rising 4th graders and other recommended summer reading titles for rising first-third grades. The sale will be in the art gallery so be sure to stop by to check it out.
A flyer with more information is coming home soon in the book bags. Thank you for your support!

LOST, BUT NOT FOUND

Throughout the year, we have collected many lost items including glasses, jewelry, etc. Please stop by the office to identify any items that you might be missing.

A FRIENDLY REMINDER

Please make sure to observe the 25 mph speed limit on Walker Street. A reminder: speeding points double in a school zone. We want to be good neighbors and keep our community safe.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR SPRING FLING

We still need 10 to 12 volunteers to help with Spring Fling. If you can volunteer, please contact Phyliss Hasen at phasen3@gmail.com

FIELD DAY AND SPRING FLING!

We are looking forward to a fun time on Friday, May 11, with our Field Day and Spring Fling celebrations. Traditionally, we gather as a Primary School family for a morning of exciting games and events. Then we enjoy a picnic lunch on the playground; Spring Fling follows with fun activities including a DJ, dancing, a storyteller, inflatables and snacks.

The day ends at 2:00 PM, and parents may check their children out at that time. Children can remain until dismissal at 3:00 PM. Please be aware that there will be no after-school care that day so children must be picked up by 3:30 PM in the front carpool area.

A lunch reservation form, along with a schedule for the day, was sent home this week, and your RSVP is due on Friday, May 4.

PRIMARY SCHOOL AND RISING FOURTH GRADE MENTOR FAMILIES NEEDED

We would like to encourage you to volunteer yourself and your family to serve as a Mentor Family for the 2012-2013 school year. As a Mentor Family, you will help a family new to Woodward by answering their questions and making them feel welcome. While the administration provides the new families with valuable information about many aspects of the Academy, it is nice for the parents to have a resource for questions about uniforms, activities, lunch, camps, etc. The Mentor Program will be hosting several events over the summer and at the beginning of the school year.  Attendance at all of the events is not required to be a Mentor Family. These events are for the New and Mentor Families and will be fun for the students as well as providing an opportunity for you to meet parents new to Woodward. Serving as a Mentor Family is such a rewarding experience. We hope you will participate!

If you are interested in welcoming a Primary School family to Woodward, please answer the questions below and turn in to the Primary School front office or email your information to Tiffany Richburg at  tchestang@bellsouth.net or Brandee Manning brandeem1911@gmail.com
For those interested in mentoring a rising fourth grade student’s family, please contact Brenda Cochran Brenda.cochran@comcast.net or Amy Roberts collinelle@yahoo.com

**NOTE:  If you would like to order your summer reading online and have them delivered to your child at the Primary School, that is another option available to you.  Online sales also benefit the Primary School.  Shipping is FREE*.  Simply put deliver to (child's name, homeroom teacher) at Woodward Academy Primary School in the “order comments” section which will appear during the checkout process.

*Any shipping charges which appear on your invoice will be reversed before your credit card is charged.

BOUNTY FOR THE PRIMARY SCHOOL

Thanks to your participation in Publix rewards, General Mills, Target and Box Tops, we earned more than $3,000 for the Primary School!  We appreciate your help and remind you to continue to collect Box Tops throughout the summer for next year’s drive.

KINDERGARTEN GETS READY FOR NEXT YEAR

In preparation for changing into PE uniforms each day, we suggest that you “practice” quickly dressing and undressing this summer. Practicing will make your child’s transition easier next year.

A REMINDER ABOUT CHANGES IN TRANSPORTATION

All transportation changes should be emailed to your child's teacher before 2:00 pm each school day.  It is also helpful to copy the office in any email changes (cindy.schneider@woodward.edu  or carol.turner@woodward.edu .)

If you need to make a last minute change, please CALL the office.  With the rush at the end of the day, we cannot guarantee that the teacher will see an email sent late in the day. We try very hard to make sure that every student gets to the proper place at the end of the day and our shared transportation document is updated throughout the school day to ensure that this happens.

WOODWARD ACADEMY SUMMER PROFESSIONAL LEARNING

A variety of professional learning conferences and workshops will be available to all educators at Woodward Academy's Main Campus this summer.

For more information about the summer learning opportunities being offered and how to register click here:  http://www.woodward.edu/summer/learning/index.aspx

IT'S RAINING CATS AND DOGS!

As we enter the season for spring storms, we wanted to remind you of our plan to keep your child safe during carpool. Woodward Academy has an automated alert for lightning in the area. When we receive this alert, we are required to hold children inside until the storm is over.  Similar to rainy day carpool when children remain inside, we will ask you to enter the front door and proceed to the gym to pick up your child.

RISING FOURTH GRADE PARENTS SAVE-THE-DATE

You are invited to join the administration of the Lower School for an informative meeting about your child’s upcoming fourth grade year on Tuesday, May 8 at 6:30 pm in the Lower School chorus room. You will have an overview of a fourth grader's day, activities and expectations, as well as an opportunity to ask questions.

THE YEARBOOKS ARE COMING!

The yearbooks will arrive soon. If you have not yet purchased a yearbook for your student, time is running out!  Yearbooks are currently $75 and will remain at that price through the end of the day on Monday, May 7th. Beginning on May 8th, the price will jump to $100 and yearbooks will be available on a first come-first served basis only. You may still purchase yearbooks online at http://woodwardyearbook.weebly.com/ or you may send payment with your child. Checks should be made payable to Woodward Academy.  You may also check your order at http://woodwardyearbook.weebly.com/ by selecting "My Orders" at the top of the screen.

GEORGIA GOAL – PARTICIPATE NOW!

Have you redirected your Georgia income tax dollars to GOAL on behalf of Woodward?  Please watch this video from Lisa Kelly, President of Georgia GOAL, and follow the link to learn how to participate. The state cap of $51.5 million is expected to be met earlier than ever before, so please redirect your tax dollars now to ensure Woodward benefits from this program. Thank you in advance for your participation!

Click the following link to view the GOAL video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MibnDuSqAg0. To learn more about GOAL and how to participate, click here: http://www.woodward.edu/about/goal/participate/index.aspx

PARKING

We would like to remind everyone to please park on the left side of the driveway when you pick up your students from an extracurricular activity or After School Care.  We have had several parents unable to get through to pick up their children due to cars being parked on both sides, waiting for students to finish their activities.

HELPFUL UNIFORM HINTS

  • Please make sure to label each piece of your child’s uniform with his/her name.
  • If you have any questions concerning uniform regulations, please refer to the Primary School Handbook page.

YOU CAN HELP OTHERS

The Primary School has a soda tab collection each year that benefits the Ronald McDonald House in Atlanta. Children can bring in their soda tabs and deposit them in the large plastic Coke bottle in the Primary School foyer. Please ask your friends and family to help us help those in need.  Thank you for your support.

YOU CAN HELP THE PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

Our drive for this year is over; however, we ask that you continue to collect Boxtops throughout the remainder of this school year and this summer for next year’s collection.

Clip Box Tops and help our school!  Box Tops for Education is a program that helps our school and your children.  Please be on the lookout for Box Tops for Education on items you use daily.  You can find these on a variety of products; please look at the following link to learn more about Box Tops for Education and to see a list of the products that have Box Tops:
https://recipe.boxtops4education.com/g/Branded?WT.mc_id=paid_search_RM_BTFE_Branded&WT.srch=1&esrc=16201&keyword=boxtops+for+education+coupons.

In addition to clipping coupons, many online stores offer Box Tops credit.  More information about this program can be found at: http://www.boxtops4education.com/earn/marketplace/Default.aspx.

Target also provides a way to benefit our school.  Choose Woodward Academy Primary School, and Target will donate one percent of your REDcard purchases at Target and Target.com.  For more information about this program, please see: https://sites.target.com/site/en/corporate/page.jsp?contentId=PRD03-005174

Please keep in mind, the money that is raised with our Box Tops and Target Red Card, “Take Care of Education,” benefits your children directly by paying for their Field Day/Spring Fling t-shirts and other student activities.  Thank you for your support!

TERRACYCLING

At the end of the last school year, we collected more than 300 Elmer's glue sticks from the Primary and Woodward North locations to send to Terracycle for recycling.  Each glue stick yielded a small donation to an organization of our choice, Cochran Mill, a local nature reserve in Palmetto, GA.

This year, we have the opportunity to increase our donation to Cochran Mill exponentially.  We have been accepted to participate in the collection of chip packets and candy wrappers.  The majority of bags and wrappers will be collected in our highest usage areas, namely the snack bars at the Main and Middle Schools (over 1,000 chip bags collected already!), but a collection bin has also been placed in the main corridor of the Primary School.

Any type of chip bag, pretzel bag or candy wrapper may be deposited into the bins.  A suggestion for collection is to have students save their chip packets from field trip sack lunches.  We will make the bins available at any on-site lunches with chips on the menu.  Of course, everyone is welcome to bring their empty wrappers in from home.  Chip and candy wrappers are "upcycled" into fun products such as backpacks, clipboards and file folders.

The Elmer's glue stick program also will continue this year, so please continue to collect glue sticks and deposit them in the bins provided in the corridor of the Primary School.

Counseling Corner by Mrs. Sherry Gary

Be an Encourager!

The character word for May at the Primary School is encouraging--giving someone hope, confidence or courage. Being a supporter of others is a skill that children have to be taught. We all want support, but do we ever stop to evaluate whether or not we are supporters of others? Do we teach children to be encouraging? I hope so. There are some basic things we can do to encourage those around us:
1. Show genuine interest: Ask questions and let others know that we care about them and their interests.
2. Acknowledge what is important to others: Each of us craves affirmation and validation from others.  It boosts our confidence and self-esteem.
3. Say “Well done”: Giving praise by saying, “good job,”  “congratulations,” “way to go,” This can make all the difference to people.
4. Say “Thank You”: Showing common courtesy and good manners is a win-win. A simple “thank you” lets others know what they do is worthwhile and meaningful.
5. Reciprocate the favor: If someone does something nice for you, a great way to show your appreciation is to do something nice for them. I call this the pendulum of kindness.
6. Do something unexpected:  An out of the blue kindness reaches people at an emotional level. When least expected, do an unexpected act of encouragement.
7. Ask for Advice or Confide in them: This is a form of flattery, but it also enhances the faith. When someone knows that you respect their opinion or confide in them, they will do everything to ensure your faith in them is well-founded.
8. Offer to lend a hand: Be proactive by volunteering to help someone. That makes the recipient more committed to their project or job themselves.

  • Accelerated Reader

At the Primary School, students in grades 1-3 participate in the Accelerated Reader program. Each student has an individual goal. The final goal date of the year is Friday, May 18th. 3rd graders will wear and take home all earned tags the last week of school. Please encourage your child to work in earnest toward making the goal! Students with healthy daily reading habits should easily accomplish the goal when reading within their book level range.

AR Bookfind (http://www.arbookfind.com/) is a great resource! Search for books of interest to your child to see a brief description of the book and the book level. Search for books in the 'advanced' setting to pinpoint areas of interest. You can help your child expedite the quizzing process at school by helping to record the quiz number to send in with the book. Most PS library books have the quiz number written on the inside cover.

  • More Library Resources Available

We are pleased to announce new subscriptions to One Click Audio and Axis 360. At One Click, accessible from the PS Library web page, students may select from hundreds of audio books.
