Upper School Social Studies

The Upper School Social Studies program encourages students to become informed citizens in our global society. The ultimate goal of the Social Studies program, therefore, is to prepare students for intellectually active participation in a free society.

The required course of study includes United States government, economics, modern world history, and United States history. The central focus of the Upper School program is history. The department feels that an understanding of the past provides the necessary perspective for making intelligent social decisions for the present and in the future. After completing the development of a historical background, students in their senior year may elect to study other areas of the social studies Thus, courses in economics, twentieth century United States history, the Middle East and east Asia are offered. Advanced Placement courses provide college level study in United States history, European history, United States government and economics.
