The Woodward Academy football hosted St. Pius X last Friday evening in the AAAA State Quarterfinals. Unfortunately, the War Eagles fell to the Golden Lions in a back-and-forth battle, 35-31. The War Eagles finished the 2017 regular season with a record of 9-1 and a perfect 6-0 region record, capturing the 4-AAAA region title and securing a #1 seed in the state playoffs. The region championship was Woodward's fourth title in as many years setting a new school record for consecutive region championships in football. In the state playoffs, the War Eagles defeated Richmond Academy in round one and West Laurens in round two before falling to St. Pius X in the state quarterfinals. The War Eagles will return a substantial portion of the 2017 roster next season and will look to once again contend for a state title.
While Woodward's fall athletic teams finished up their 2017 season, the winter sports programs are in full swing. The girls and boys basketball teams opened Region 4-AAAA action this week when Woodward hosted Eastside HS. The girls team held a late 3-point lead but two quick basketball in the final seconds by the visitors resulted in a 54-53 loss for the Lady War Eagles. The boys team held a 29-21 halftime lead over the visiting Eagles. The War Eagles used a 22-point third quarter to build an insurmountable lead and picked up a 68-43 win. Next up for both teams will be a trip to Druid Hills and Westminster on back-to-back evenings before returning home on Tuesday, December 5th to host North Clayton.
Woodward Academy's wrestling team had the week off but has started the 2017-18 season in strong fashion. The War Eagles currently own a 13-2 dual meet record including a perfect 4-0 performance at the Prep Duals where the team captured first place. Woodward also finished 2nd at the Early Bird Duals and 5th at the Etowah Duals. The War Eagles will travel to South Carolina on December 1st and 2nd for the annual Southern Slam. The teams next home meet is set for Wednesday, December 6th where the War Eagles will host Northgate, Hiram and Forest Park.
The boys swimming and diving team improved to 3-0 in dual meet action this week defeating Columbus 200-105 while the girls team suffered a 184-110 loss to the visiting Blue Devils. Both teams will host North Atlanta on Thursday, December 7th in the final home match before the holiday break. In other swimming news, Woodward Academy 7th grade swimmer Andrew Bleuez has now broken FIVE Woodward Academy middle school swim records this season. The latest being the 200 free with a time of 1:58.27.
