Teaching at Woodward

WA faculty

As a faculty member of the Academy, we ask that all teachers go through the certification process. Curriculum information can be found through the curriculum page. The Academy is working on a curriculum mapping program at this time. In terms of benefits, there is tuition remission for faculty/staff members to take additional college classes. For more information, please contact the headmaster's office at 404.765.4010. If you are a current employee, please go to HR Intranet.

Additional Benefit Information

As a full time* employee of the Academy, the faculty qualifies for the following benefits, just like a staff member does. Eligible for health and voluntary benefits begin on your hire date.

  1. Medical Insurance:  Woodward Academy’s medical plan is provided through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia. The Academy pays 100% of the single premium for each full time employee.  If family coverage is desired, the employee pays that portion of the premium through payroll deductions on a pre-tax basis.
  2. 2. Dental Insurance: Woodward Academy’s dental plan is provided through Assurant. The Academy pays 100% of the single premium for each full time employee who elects the dental DHMO plan. The DHMO plan allows you to choose a dentist from the directory list. The Dental ASO plan gives you the option of choosing your own dentist. There will be a deductible and benefits are paid on a percentage basis. The premium for this plan is shared by each full time employee and Woodward Academy for a cost through payroll deduction. If family coverage is desired, the employee pays that portion of the premium through payroll deduction. Any required payroll deduction will be paid on a pre-tax basis.
  3. Vision Insurance: Woodward Academy’s vision plan is provided through Eyecare Plan of America (Eyemed) and provides for substantial savings on eye exams, frames, contact lenses and vision correction procedures. Woodward Academy pays 100% of the single premium for each full time employee. If family coverage is desired, the employee pays that portion of the premium through payroll deduction on a pre-tax basis.
  4. Life Insurance/Accidental Death or Dismemberment: Woodward Academy provides life insurance coverage for each employee through UnumProvident. The coverage provided is for two times your W-2 earnings, up to $200,000. There is an additional 2X employee’s earnings (up to a maximum of $200,000) for accidental death or dismemberment. If you wish, you may purchase additional life insurance in increments of $10,000 up to $500,000 or 5X the employee’s annual earnings, whichever is less. Amounts of coverage equal to or lesser than $100,000 can be purchased without answering medical questions. Elected coverage amounts above $100,000 will require an employee to complete a medical questionnaire. The premium will be based on the employee’s age and will be paid through payroll deduction on post-tax basis.
  5. Disability - Short Term:  Woodward Academy allows all full time employees the ability to purchase short-term disability coverage through UnumProvident.  Benefits due to an accident begin immediately. Benefits due to an illness begin after a period of 7 days of disability and may continue through the 13th week, at which point long term disability would go into effect. This policy will provide 60% of an employee’s pre-disability income to a maximum of $1,000 per week.
  6. Disability - Long Term: Woodward Academy allows all full time employees the ability to purchase long-term disability coverage through Guardiam.  Benefits begin after a period of 90 days of employee’s pre-disability income to a maximum monthly benefit of $5,000 per month disability and may continue until age 65 or Social Security Normal Retirement Age (SSNRA). This policy will provide 60% of an employee’s pre-disability income of a maximum of $1,000 per week.

Please note: As a new employee if you do not enroll within 30 days of first becoming eligible for health coverage and you apply for coverage at a later date, the insurance company, at their sole discretion, may refuse coverage based on an employee’s medical history. In addition, if the insurance company does allow coverage to a late enrollee, pre-existing medical conditions may be subject to limited coverage under the plan.

Employees who do not choose to enroll in any of the voluntary benefit programs at the time that they are first eligible, must wait for the next “Re-enrollment” period to apply for coverage. Re-enrollment is generally held once a year in September with prior notification to employees.

Also, if you choose to withhold medical, dental and/or vision premiums on a pre-tax basis, you cannot revoke or change this election during the Plan Year unless there is a qualifying “Status change”. This restriction is imposed by the IRS.

  1. Fulton Teachers’ Credit Union:  Members are eligible for a wide range of services, such as free checking, ATM cards, overdraft protection, and interest bearing accounts. The savings and loan rates are competitive with the market price.
  2. Direct Deposit:  Automatic Payroll Deposit is an optional payroll-processing feature    this allows for the automatic deposit of your paycheck into your personal checking or savings account on payday.
  3. Retirement Plan:  Woodward Academy’s 403(b) is provided by TIAA/CREF. Your taxable income is reduced by the amount you contribute through salary deferral; this in turn reduces your current federal and state income taxes. You do not pay taxes on this deferred income until you start drawing benefits from your account upon retirement. All employees who work a minimum of 1,040 hours per year may join TIAA-CREF at any time. At the beginning of your third year of employment, (for full time employees), Woodward Academy will match contributions up to 6% of your salary. You may choose from different investment options but Woodward Academy will only match your contribution with TIAA-CREF. Information for the additional retirement options listed on the Salary Reduction agreements are available in the Business Office.
  4. Section 125 Cafeteria Plan – Health Insurance Premiums and Dependent Care Reimbursement Account:  This plan allows a full time employee to pay for any health insurance premiums and/or day care expenses through a licensed provider with pre-tax dollars throughout the year.  The employee is required to renew the dependent Care Reimbursement Account on October 1st every year.  You must wait until the next October 1st date to enroll if you waive your opportunity to participate in the Dependent Care Reimbursement Account.
  5. Vacation:  Vacation benefits are provided to full time employees (excluding teaching faculty and contracted instructional support personnel) and to part time employees on a prorated basis. Employees earn vacation benefits from their first day of work. The following employees accrue vacation benefits based on years of service with Woodward Academy and depending on their area.
  6. Sick/Personal Days: Sick/Personal days are provided to full time employees calculated on their full time equivalency (FTE). Teaching faculty and contracted support personnel will accrue 10 days times their FTE per year (August through May).

*full time employee - any employee working a minimum of 30 hours per week
