Planning is under way for the third and final capital project of Campaign Woodward—a new humanities building for the Upper School. At 103,000 square feet, the building will be the largest single building on campus, housing the English, History and Foreign Language departments and the Upper School administration.
The building will occupy the footprint of the existing West, Brewster and McKay Halls. With a traditional brick front, the structure will have glass walls at the back to admit an abundance of natural light and provide views onto an outdoor quadrangle, a green gathering space for Upper School students. (Watch the virtual tour of the building.)
Our fundraising goal for the humanities building is $21 million. The administration plans to hold off on construction until the goal is met in cash and pledges and at least 75 percent of cash is received.
Campaign Woodward's successes so far include completed fundraising for its endowment component as well as two major building projects that are already providing enhanced opportunities for students:
- The new 43,000-square-foot Upper School math, science and college counseling center, which opened in August 2008 and is connected to the Thalia N. Carlos Science Building.
- The new athletic and fitness complex at the Upper School, which opened in January 2010 for student use. (Campaign Woodward also provided extensive renovations to Dobbs Gymnasium and the creation of a new stadium complex, including a field with state-of-the-art artificial turf. The new stadium complex opened in August 2009.)
