Each year, Woodward Academy students take part in community projects to support our veterans in Georgia, across the United States, and overseas.

In October 2022, the girls lacrosse team led by coach Kate Armstrong partnered with Delta TechOps on a service project to support United States service men and women who are currently overseas. The team gathered items for donation, wrote letters of appreciation, and packed and shipped 30 care packages that will be sent to three Navy ships–USS Farragut, USS Leyte Gulf, and USS Truxtun.

In November 2022, the Upper School Service Leadership Board invited students to write letters to veterans from the Woodward community and beyond to express gratitude for their service. Over 50 students volunteered to write letters of appreciation to veterans. They wrote well over 100 notes of gratitude, including to current Woodward employees who are veterans.

In honor of Veterans Day 2024, the URSA house challenged the middle school to show their support for our courageous Academy veterans. Each homeroom "adopted" two veterans, resulting in a collaborative effort that produced 262 heartfelt letters sent to 64 alumni. We are excited to continue this meaningful tradition in the years to come, fostering connections between our students and the alumni who have served our country so bravely.

In 2025, Woodward Academy Middle Schoolers are once again extending their gratitude to our nation's veterans and active-duty military members through a heartfelt letter-writing campaign. For the second year in a row, each homeroom has "adopted" an alumni who has served, is currently serving, or is attending a military academy.
Students poured their thoughts and appreciation onto the pages, sharing personal reflections about their middle school experiences. They wrote about their houses—each with its own unique values—and connected those themes to the larger ideas of service and community. This project is a powerful way for students to reflect on the importance of community, both within the walls of our school and across our nation.
