This Week in Athletics – December 7
Woodward Academy's winter athletic teams are in full swing and the War Eagles turned in several outstanding performances this week.
Woodward Academy’s Boys basketball team opened the season ranked in the top 10 in AAAA and the War Eagles are looking like worthy recipients of that ranking. Last Friday the War Eagles got everyone playing time as Woodward cruised to a 82-48 win over visiting Hampton HS. The boys were right back in action the next day as Woodward played a Saturday match-up against a top 5 ranked AAAAA Fayette County squad. The War Eagles had several opportunities to pull out a victory but dropped a close game to the Tigers 57-56. Earlier this week Woodward hosted top 10 ranked and Region 4-AAAA foe Henry County in a game that likely set the tone for region play in 2018-19. Woodward lead by just one point at the half but used a 19-10 third quarter to take control of the game and win 68-58. The Boys are now 4-2 overall and 3-0 in Region 4-AAAA.
The Woodward Academy Girls basketball team went 1-1 over the span of the last seven days. The Lady War Eagles picked up their first Region 4-AAAA victory last Friday defeating Hampton HS 48-34. The girls jumped out to an early 17-3 first quarter lead and never looked back. On Tuesday evening the Lady War Eagles ran into a fast paced and top 5 ranked Henry County team. The girls fell to the Lady Warhawks 70-41 putting their early season record at 1-5 overall and 1-2 in region play.
Woodward Academy’s wrestling team has been busy in the early part of the winter season. The War Eagles currently own a 14-1 dual meet record having captured 1st place at both the Prep Duals and Early Bird Duals as well as going 4-1 at the Etowah Duals. Last weekend the team competed in the annual Southern Slam held at Eastside High School in Taylors, SC. In a tournament featuring some of the top programs in the southeast and over 50 total teams, the War Eagles took 2nd place overall including four individual champions. Nick Masters (126), Michael Kilic (132), Matthew Singleton (145) and Malcolm Wiley (195) all captured individual titles with Malachi Wiley (160) taking 2nd place and McCoy Pace (152) taking 6th.
The Boys and Girls Swimming and Diving teams hosted rival Blessed Trinity this week. Blessed Trinity’s Boys squad finished last season 4th overall at the State Meet while the Girls squad was last season’s state champion. Both Woodward squads swam a strong meet including a solid performance from the diving team allowing the War Eagles to sweep the Titans. The boys recorded a 211-94 win while the girls won 167-143. Next up for Woodward will be the annual Madeleine Jude Brown Invitational at Georgia Tech’s Aquatic Center on December 15th.
Woodward Academy’s Riflery team opened their 2018-19 season this week. The War Eagles traveled to Griffin, GA to face Spalding High School at the Ole Mill Range. Woodward’s top shooter was Manaphy Wang recording a 287 total, leading the War Eagles to a 1126-1069 win.
