This Week in Athletics – Fall Wrap-up
The fall athletic season officially came to a close last Friday when the Woodward Football team fell to Mary Person in the AAAA State Playoffs. It was a fall season void of any state championships but still a very successful athletic season with every Woodward Academy program advancing to their respective state playoffs.
Woodward Academy’s Football team had its streak of four consecutive region championships broke this season but still advanced the AAAA state playoffs. Hampered by a few mid-season injuries, the War Eagles finished the 2018 regular season with a 6-4 record and 4-2 record in region play. Woodward Academy entered the state football playoffs for the 11th straight season, advancing to the 2nd round where the War Eagles were eliminated by #2 ranked Mary Persons. With a roster full of underclassmen, Woodward will look to regain control of the region and once again return to the state playoffs in 2019.
The Woodward Academy Volleyball team captured the region championship in 2018, giving the Lady War Eagles the #1 seed from Region 4-AAAA for the state playoffs. In addition, four Woodward Academy team members were named to the All-Region team. Kalyn Pierre (setter), Morgan Cobb (OH), Morgan Miller (OH) and Sam McCool (libero) were all named 1st team All-Region. Woodward Academy sailed through the AAAA State Playoffs to the quarterfinal round were the Lady War Eagles fell to a top ranked Marist program. The Lady War Eagle Volleyball team consisted of all underclassmen this season priming the team for another playoff run in 2019.
Woodward Academy’s Boys Cross Country team captured the region championship for the first time since 2014 this season. The Girls Cross Country team just missed completing the sweep, finishing as region runner-up but qualifying both squads for the AAAA State Championships. At the state championships in Carrollton, GA the boys team placed 9th while the girls squad recorded a 13th place finish. Several runners garnered All-Region honors in 2018. Boys team members Will Reese, Drake Oakhill and Hrydesh Patel along with girls team members CeCe Ng, Brooklyn Carr and Parker Daly were all named 1st Team All-Region. Gavin Frey, Justin Frediani, Jett Matre, Arman Ramji, Abbey Miller, Meryl Inman and Wallace Putt were each named 2nd Team All-Region.
The Woodward Academy Softball team placed 4th this season in the Region 4-AAAA tournament, advancing the Lady War Eagles to the State Softball Tournament for the 7th consecutive season. Matched up against one of the top ranked teams in the state, the Lady War Eagles were eliminated in the first round by Northside, Columbus. Woodward had a pair of Lady War Eagles named to the All-Region team. Freshman pitcher Mackenzie Morris was named 1st team All-Region while senior shortstop Ariana Alvord was named 2nd team All-Region.
Woodward Academy’s Competition Cheer squad finished as Region 4-AAAA runner-up this year, qualifying the Lady War Eagles for the AAAA State Sectionals. Turning in one of their best performances of the year at Sectionals, Woodward Academy missed advancing to the State Finals by just one place. In addition to a strong sectional routine, the Lady War Eagles also captured 1st place at the Buford Competition held in early October.
