Softball kicks off post season play while volleyball, football, cross country and cheerleading keep building towards possible region titles.
Woodward Academy’s varsity softball team concluded the region tournament on October 2nd finishing 4th overall in Region 4-AAAA. This placed the Lady War Eagles in the AAAA State Playoffs for the 7th consecutive season. Unfortunately, Woodward Academy was matched up against a Northside-Columbus team ranked #2 in AAAA. The Lady Patriots swept the Lady War Eagles in a best of three series, ending the season for Woodward Academy.
The Lady War Eagle volleyball team started their Region 4-AAAA tournament this week traveling out to Eastside High School. In the opening round, Woodward Academy matched up against Henry County HS. The Lady War Eagles breezed through the first round with a 25-8, 25-12 sweep of the Lady Tigers and a guaranteed spot in the AAAA state playoffs. Next up will be a trip to Hampton High School on Saturday, October 13th for the semifinal and finals before 1st round state playoff action begins on Saturday, October 20th.
The War Eagle football team returned from their off week to face region foe Eastside in a game of region unbeatens with the winner anticipated to control their own destiny in capturing the Region 4-AAAA title. Woodward Academy started off quickly leading 17-0 after one quarter and holding a 24-7 lead at halftime. Eastsides’ offense came to life in the 2nd half and the Eagles outscored Woodward Academy 31-7 to win the game 38-31. Sophomore QB Banks Snellings was 21 of 29 passing for 339 yards and four touchdowns. Senior Tahj Gary rushed for 130 yards on just 17 carries along with 135 yards receiving and two touchdowns. Juniors Aaron Washington and Jason Moncure lead the defense with 14 and 12 total tackles respectively. Woodward next travels to region newcomer Hampton HS on Friday, October 12th.
The boys and girls cross country teams posted their best team averages of the season last Saturday at the Alexander / Asics Invitational hosted at the Foxhall Sporting Club. The boys placed 24th out of 33 teams in the Championship division as Hrydesh Patel, Gavin Frey, and Will Reese each broke the 18-minute barrier. The girls team, led by Cece Ng and Brooklyn Carr, placed 16th out of 24 teams in the girl’s Championship Division. Both squads will compete on Saturday, October 13th at the Clinton Nature Preserve in the last regular season race of the year before the Region Championships on Thursday, October 25th at Nash Farm Battlefield in Henry County.
Woodward Academy’s competition cheerleading squads turned in outstanding performances at the Buford Competition last Saturday. The varsity squad captured 1st place over with their best finish of the season while the JV placed 4th and the Middle School squad finished 3rd. All three squads will conclude their regular season schedule Saturday, October 20th at the Hillgrove competition.
