This Week in Athletics - September 21
Gene Patterson

It was another busy week in the world of War Eagle Athletics.

The War Eagle football team returned to action after having one of their two off weeks.  Woodward Academy played host last Friday evening to region foe Henry County in the opener of Region 4-AAAA play.  The War Eagles wasted little time in jumping on the visiting War Hawks. Woodward found the end zone on three separate occasions in the first 10 minutes to take an early 21-0 lead.  The War Eagles went scoreless in the 2nd quarter but went right back to finding the end zone in the 2nd half and closed the game out with a 52-7 win.  Junior QB Mike Wright threw for 174 yards and 2 TDs while senior running back Tahj Gary lead all rushers with 117 yards and added rushing, receiving and punt return touchdowns.  LB Errington Truesdell lead the defense with 10 total tackles while DB DA Allen intercepted a pass and DB DJ Gibson recovered a Henry County football.  The War Eagles (2-2 overall, 1-0 in region) have their 2nd off week on September 21st before they return to action at North Dekalb Stadium on September 28th to face Druid Hills.

The Lady War Eagle volleyball team competed last weekend in the annual Lovett Block Party.  Woodward Academy finished 1-2 in pool play before being eliminated by Marist 2-0 in the tournament format.  The past week was another busy one for the Lady War Eagle’s as they played four matches, all on the road.  First, the team traveled back to Lovett to face two top 10 ranked teams in Lovett and Hebron Christian.  The Lady War Eagles suffered a pair of losses, falling 2-0 to both schools.  Next up was a trip to Blessed Trinity for a match-up against two #1 ranked schools.  Blessed Trinity, #1 in AAAA, and Mt. Paran, #1 in A-Private, each handed Woodward 2-0 losses.  The Lady War Eagles will return home on Tuesday, October 2nd to host Wesleyan and Pace Academy as the team celebrates senior night.

Woodward Academy’s varsity softball team had a lighter week this past week with just one game on the schedule as the Lady War Eagles traveled to Troup County HS.  Troup won the non-region match-up 16-0 over the Lady War Eagles.  The team will play their final regular season game on Monday, September 24th at home against Luella HS before entering the region tournament.

The boys and girls cross country teams ran some of their best times of the season in the 3rd Annual Big Peach Mustang Stampede at Allatoona Creek Park. The varsity girls, led by Cece Ng's season-best time, finished 10th of 19 teams. The varsity boys, led by Will Reese's season-best time and only a 42-second spread between their 1st-7th finishers, placed 9th of 21 teams.

Woodward’s competition cheerleading squad gets their competitive season started this weekend.  The Lady War Eagles will be competing at Lambert HS along with both the JV and Middle School squads.  The Lady War Eagles will be competing the next three Saturdays traveling to Starr’s Mill and Buford along with this week’s trip to Lambert.
