This Week in Athletics - September 28

Woodward Academy’s football team had their 2nd open week of the season but all the other War Eagles athletic teams had a full schedule this week, until the weather took over.

Woodward Academy’s varsity volleyball squad continued with their region schedule this week.  On Tuesday the Lady War Eagles traveled to Salem High School to take on host Salem as well as Hampton HS.  Woodward defeated Salem 25-5, 25-8 behind Morgan Miller’s 4 kills and Salina Salim’s 7 ace serves.  The Lady War Eagles followed with a 25-13, 25-15 victory over Hampton High School.  Freshman Sarai Davis recorded 8 kills with junior Kayln Pierre and freshman Lauren Hayes added 4 kills each.  The team will celebrate senior night on Tuesday, October 2nd as the Lady War Eagles host Weslyan and Pace Academy in the final regular season home matches of the season.

The Lady War Eagle softball team was scheduled to have a full week, first hosting Luella High School in the season finale before beginning the Region 4-AAAA tournament.  The team was able to get in the finale against Luella but the week’s scheduled events for the region tournament were disrupted by inclement weather.  The opening game against Luella was an important one with the winner securing the #3 seed in the region tournament and home field advantage for the opening round.  Woodward jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before Luella tied things up in the 4th.  Woodward fought right back and plated 2 more runs in the bottom of the 4th to reclaim the lead.  Leading 6-2 in the 6th, the Lady Lions rallied to score 3 runs closing the gap to 6-5.  A key insurance run for the Lady War Eagles in the bottom of the 6th however helped secure a 7-6 Woodward win to close out the regular season.  McKenzie Morris got the win going 7 innings and striking out 10 including the final batter of the game.  Opening rounds of the region tournament were set to begin on Wednesday but continued to get rained out for the remainder of the week.

The boys and girls cross country competed Saturday in the Aubrae Gunderson Invitational at the Georgia International Horse Park. The varsity girls, led by Cece Ng's season-best time, finished 9th of 16 teams while the varsity boys, led by Gavin Frey's season-best time, placed 8th of 20 teams.  Both squads were also scheduled to race at Wesleyan in the middle of the week but got postponed due to severe weather.  Woodward competes next at the Alexander Invitational at Foxhall on Saturday, October 6th

The War Eagle football team (2-2 overall, 1-0 in region) had their 2nd off week on September 21st.  The team returns to action at North Dekalb Stadium on September 28th to face Druid Hills and then will return home for an important match-up against current region front runner Eastside High School on October 5th.

Woodward Academy’s clay target team competed at Tom Lowe last weekend. The War Eagles team took 2nd place overall behind the performances of Colin Caldwell, Robert Hicklin, Izzy Baldwin and Cullen Stradtman.  Colin Caldwell was the team’s top shooter of the day taking 1st overall in Skeet and 3rd overall individually.

Woodward Academy’s competition cheerleading squad opened their competitive season last week at Lambert High School.  The Lady War Eagles placed 4th overall and will look to improve on their performance this weekend at the Starr’s Mill High School competition.
