This Week in Athletics – September 7
Woodward Academy athletic teams enjoyed a day off this past week to celebrate Labor Day, but several programs still had a busy week as the War Eagles have entered the heart of the 2018 Fall season.
The Lady War Eagle volleyball team had FIVE matches this week with two matches against top 10 teams. Woodward started off the week with three region matches hosted by North Clayton. The Lady War Eagles defeated Druid Hills 2-0 and host North Clayton 2-0 but fell to Eastside High School 2-0. On Thursday the team traveled to McIntosh High School for matches against AAAAA #1 ranked McIntosh and AAAA #4 ranked Columbus. The Lady War Eagles fell to both squads 2-0 and now stand at 9-12 on the season. The Lady War Eagles return home on September 11th hosting region foes Luella and Henry County.
Woodward Academy’s varsity softball team played a pair of games this week. On Tuesday the Lady War Eagles traveled to Northgate High School to take on the Lady Vikings. Woodward’s bats struggled to find hits against Northgate’s pitching resulting in a 10-2 loss. The Lady War Eagles reversed the trend on Thursday evening against region foe Salem. Woodward bats recorded 9 runs on 8 hits and pitcher Mackenzie Morris threw 6 innings of 1-hit softball while striking 9 to get the win. The Lady War Eagles will celebrate senior night on Tuesday, September 11th when Woodward host Henry County. First pitch is scheduled for 5:55 PM with senior night activities to start prior to first pitch.
The War Eagle football team is idle this week after hosting #1 ranked and defending AAAA State Champion Blessed Trinity last week. The War Eagles playing on a beautiful, newly installed artificial surface played the talented Titans even in the first half trailing just 15-14 at halftime. Unfortunately, a mistake riddled third quarter allowed Blessed Trinity to score 21 unanswered points securing a 43-21 win over the War Eagles. Junior quarterback Mike Wright was 12 of 16 passing for 248 yards and a touchdown while running back Tahj Gary rushed for 92 yards on 13 carries. The War Eagles open region 4-AAAA play on Friday, September 14th hosting Henry County HS. Kickoff set for 7:30 PM.
The boys and girls cross country squads had the last week off but will be competing on Saturday, September 8th at the annual Coach Benson Double Dip hosted by Marist. Woodward’s competition cheer squad continues to work hard preparing for their first competition of the year which will be held at Lambert High School on Saturday, September 22nd. The Clay Targets team has been idle recently but will also return to action on Saturday, September 22nd at the Tom Lowe Trap and Skeet Range.
In other news…..Junior boys lacrosse player Eric Malever continues to receive national attention as one of the nation’s top 5 recruits – the University of Maryland commit hopes to help lead the War Eagle lacrosse team to another state playoff appearance this spring.
