Woodward Academy’s winter athletic teams have been buys so far this season.  Clay Targets had a strong showing at the GISA State Championships, wrestling traveled to several out-of-state events and boys basketball team has been featured in a few early season invitationals.

Woodward Academy’s Clay Targets team competed in the 2018 GISA Clay Target State Championships in early December.  The event held at the Forest City Gun Club in Savannah, GA featured some of the top independent school teams in Georgia.  The War Eagles placed 4th overall behind the shooting of Izzy Baldwin, Grayson Phillips and Preston Wright.  Senior Izzy Baldwin finished 14th overall and 3rd in the Ladies High Overall (HOA) placing 3rd in all three events (Skeet, Trap and Sporting Clays).  Abby White also had a strong finish in the Ladies HOA finishing in 4th.  Also finishing in the top 5 in the ladies competition were Courtney Raymer - 4th in Skeet, Abbey Christensen - 5th in Skeet, Meg Morris - 2nd in Trap and Abby White - 4th in Sporting Clays.

The War Eagle Wrestling team is off to a strong start as the War Eagles look to contend at this year’s State Duals Championships in early January.  Woodward is currently 14-1 in dual meet action including 1st place finishes at the Early Bird Duals and the Prep Duals.  At the annual Southern Slam at Eastside High School in Taylors, SC, the War Eagles placed 2nd overall with several outstanding performances.  Nick Masters (126), Michael Kilic (132), Matthew Singleton (145) and Malcolm Wiley (195) all captured individual titles with Malachi Wiley (160) placing 2nd.   The War Eagles also took a small continent to the Border Wars at South Walton HS in Florida and placed 5th overall.  The team will travel to Pigeon Forge, TN overall the holiday break for the Smokey Mountain Duals.

Boys and Girls Basketball is in full swing as the holiday break approaches with both teams preparing for the annual War Eagle Classic.  Woodward will host 25 games over 2 days featuring some of the best teams in Georgia, Alabama, Florida and Tennessee.  The boys team is currently 6-5 overall but has been hampered recently by a slew of injuries.  Four of Woodward’s five losses to date have all come at the hands of top ranked teams.  The War Eagles recently played in the Atlanta Hawks/Naismith Classic facing #4 ranked Pace Academy.  The War Eagles lead most of the game but faltered in the closing minutes falling 58-51.  The girls team has also been busy playing their fair share of top ranked teams as well.  While the Lady War Eagles are 3-8 overall, the team’s three wins have all been over Region 4-AAAA foes placing the Lady War Eagles in the middle of the region standings.  The girls squad is set to face Sparkman High School from Alabama and Paideia in the upcoming War Eagle Classic.

Woodward Academy’s Swimming and Diving teams will be idle over the holiday break with both returning to action January 10th vs. Marist.  The boys teams is currently 4-0 in dual meet action while the girls team is 2-2 overall.  Both teams recorded big victories in their last meet before the break.  Woodward hosted rival Blessed Trinity at the Kennedy Natatorium in a match-up of two state contenders.  The boys squad dominated the Titans winning 211-94 while the girls team came away with an exciting 167-143 win.
