Woodward’s Boys and Girls basketball teams are approaching their respective Region Tournaments with both hoping to make strong runs in the AAAA State Tournament. The boys are currently 13-8 and 8-3 in Region 4-AAAA. While the team has eight losses on the year, the War Eagles have competed in several high-level invitationals. Over the Christmas holiday, the boys team traveled to Nashville, TN for the Nxt Lvl (Next Level) Tournament. Competing against some of the top boys teams in the eastern US, the War Eagles finished the tournament with a 2-1 record. Junior’s Walker Kessler and Jaccorei Turner are currently #1 and #8 respectively in Region 4-AAAA in scoring. The girls team is currently 6-15 overall and 4-7 in Region 4-AAAA. While currently in the middle of the pack in Region 4-AAAA, the future looks extremely bright for the Lady War Eagles. The girls varsity roster has just two seniors and one junior to go along with eight freshman, including the 3rd leading scorer in the state of Georgia, Sydney Bowles. Both teams will look to qualify for the AAAA State Tournament at the Region Tournament beginning February 4th.
Woodward Academy’s Swimming and Diving teams will compete in the annual Metro City Championships followed by the GHSA State Championships in two weeks. The boys squad finished as the AAAA-AAAAA State Runner-up last season and hope to contend for the championship again this year. The boys are currently 7-0 in dual meet action with impressive wins over Roswell and Marist this season. The girls team will also be competing in the upcoming Metro City and State Championships. The Lady War Eagles are currently 3-4 in dual meet action and are looking to move up from last season’s 12th place finish at the state meet.
