The Woodward Academy Wrestling team competed in the 2019 AAAA State Duals last weekend in Macon. After capturing the area title, the War Eagles entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed. Woodward opened the first round with a 59-15 win over Madison County. In the quarterfinals, the War Eagles bested Cartersville 56-18 advancing Woodward to the semifinal round against West Laurens. West Laurens held an early 24-6 lead before the War Eagles won six of the next seven, including a pin by Malachi Wiley, leading Woodward to a 39-35 victory. In the finals, Woodward squared off against Gilmer County. Again, the War Eagles trailed early, falling behind 16-6 before another string of wins put Woodward in the lead. Leading 31-27, Wiley’s pin put the match out of reach and gave Woodward a final score of 37-33 for their first ever State Dual Championship!

Woodward wrestlers will now prepare for the traditional format season where several wrestlers will be favorites to capture individual titles as well as the team being a strong contender to capture the traditional title as well.
