Woodward Academy Wrestling Captures 4th at State Duals

Woodward Academy’s wrestling team recently competed in the GHSA State Dual Wrestling Championships. The War Eagles had previously captured back-to-back AAAA State Dual Championships before moving up to the AAAAA classification this season. To qualify for this year’s state competition, the War Eagles had to capture the Area 3-AAAAA title. Unfortunately, in the weeks leading up to the Area finals, the varsity squad entered COVID quarantine. However, the Woodward JV squad stepped up to the task, bringing home the Area Championship with wins over Banneker and Forest Park.

With the War Eagles back to full strength, Woodward Academy advanced to the AAAAA State Dual Preliminary round. First, the War Eagles took care of Northside-Columbus with a resounding 78-4 win before taking down Jones County in the finals 56-12. The win advanced Woodward to the State Championships held at Locust Grove High School.

The War Eagles entered the AAAAA State Championship Tournament as the No. 2 seed in the 8-team field. Round one pitted the War Eagles against Ware County from South Georgia. The War Eagles got out to an earlier lead and never looked back defeating the Gators 42-21. In the semifinal round, Woodward was matched up against a very tough Cass High School squad. Both teams battled back and forth but, in the end, it was Cass with a few more pins than the War Eagles moving Woodward to the consolation bracket with a 42-37 loss. With a 3rd or 4th place finish still possible, the War Eagles faced Walnut Grove in the Consolation semifinals. Again, Woodward took control of the match early and held on to defeat the Warriors 41-34. Woodward advanced to the Consolation Finals where the War Eagles faced Ola High School. In a back and forth battle, the dual came down to the final match of the day. Woodward Academy held a slim 37-36 lead but unfortunately dropped the final match and fell to Ola 40-37 to take 4th place.

Congratulations to the War Eagles on an outstanding Dual season, another Area Championship, and a 4th place overall finish in AAAAA. The wrestling squad will now prepare for the Traditional format competition with the War Eagles once again looking to crown several individual state champions.
