The Woodward Academy Wrestling team captured their 2nd State Championship of the season at the State Traditional Tournament in Macon, GA. In addition, the War Eagles added five individual champions and one state runner-up.
Fresh off their 2019 State Dual Team Championship in early January, the War Eagle Wrestling team put on an impressive display last weekend at the State Traditional Wrestling Tournament. The War Eagles qualified 10 individuals for the tournament which started on Wednesday and ran through Saturday evening. Woodward Academy had six wrestlers advance to Friday’s semifinals with all six cruising into the championships round. Five out of the six wrestlers defeated their opponent by fall with the sixth winning by a major decision. In Saturday’s championship matches, the War Eagles continued to impress winning FIVE individual state titles and one state runner-up. Nick Masters (126), Michael Kilic (132), Matthew Singleton (138), McCoy Pace (145) and Malcolm Wiley (195) each won individual titles while Malachi Wiley (152) brought home a 2nd place finish. Nick Masters recorded his 3rd state title and Malcolm Wiley picked up his 2nd individual championship.
The Traditional Championship title marks the end of an historic Woodward Academy Wrestling season. In 2019, the War Eagles captured the first Team Dual State Championship in school history and for the first time swept both the Dual and Traditional Championships. In addition, Woodward’s six state finalist is the most in school history as is the War Eagles five individual titles this year. Woodward Academy was the only school in all seven GHSA classifications to take home five individual state titles.
