A Message from the Athletic Director
Athletic Director Jose Fernandez shares his sentiments about the exciting season that each spring sport team has had.
The baseball squad finished the season with a perfect 14-0 region record capturing the Region 3-AAAAA Championship for the second consecutive year.
The War Eagles finished third overall in the AAAAA State Championships at the Okefenokee Country Club.
Competing in one of the toughest regions in A-AAAAA, the War Eagles qualified for the state championship and advanced to the Elite 8 before falling to Starr's Mill.
The boys soccer team finished the regular season 19-2-0 with a perfect 7-0 region record and a No. 4 national ranking by the United Soccer Coaches.
The boys tennis season began with a dominating performance in the Rome Invitational Tournament where the team was named the inaugural tournament champions.
The boys Ultimate team finished the season winning five of six games to advance to the state quarterfinals.
The eSports team had a great year, competing against 191 GHSA teams and placing 16th in GHSA's Smash Ultimate Varsity League.
The girls golf squad made another appearance in the State Championships this spring after finishing with the lowest overall team score in their eight-team sectional to qualify for the meet.
The girl's lacrosse team finished their season strong as one of the top five teams in the 5-AAAAA region area 2.
The girls soccer team captured the Region 3-AAAAA Championship to advance to the state playoffs, remaining undefeated in region play for the sixth consecutive year.
Once again, the team went undefeated in region play for the seventh consecutive year and swept Tri-Cities 4-0 to be crowned Region 3-AAAAA Champions.
The girls Ultimate team advanced to the state playoffs for the third time in the last five years.
The Woodward riflery team finished the regular season with a 9-1 record and a third-place finish in the area standings.
The track and field squads competed in the AAAAA State Champions at Kinnett Stadium in Columbus, Ga. The girl's team captured Region 3-AAAAA Championships, while the boys finished as runners-up.
2022 Winter
The 2021-2022 War Eagles completed another successful season and qualified for the state tournament for the 5th consecutive year.
The team finished in the top four for both the traditional and state tournament. In the state dual tournament, Woodward finished in 2nd place and three seniors were crowned individual state champions.
For the first time in Academy history, Woodward competed in the GHSA Game Day Cheer Competition this season.
2021 Fall
The War Eagles boys cross country team had a strong 2021 season. The team finished as the 3-AAAAA Region Champions, and posted times in the 17s this season.
The Clay Target team turned in another strong performance this season, capturing 1st place at the Chuck Wetherington Classic and 6th place at the GISA State Championships.
Coach Ryan Davis knows the power of subtlety.
“I’m kind of the laid-back coach. I don’t have to scream and holler,” he said. “When I’m mad, you know I’m mad, and when I’m fussing, there’s a reason I’m fussing.”
