The boys cross country team had a very strong 2021 season! The boys had five runners post times in the 17s this season. Senior Justin Frediani posted the year’s fastest time of 17:15 at the Wingfoot Classic Meet in September. Swen Cain, a three-year senior, finished his career with an all-time PR of 18:44, with his classmates Jack Dempsey and Thomas Freer consistently placing in the top five for the team, finishing their four-year-run for the War Eagles with some of their best performances.
The team finished as the 3-5A Region Champions, with freshman Paul Byrnes emerging as the Region Champion with a time of 17:40. The boys’ average time of 17:53 was 44 seconds faster than last year. They also ran a perfect score. At the GHSA State Meet in Carrollton, Frediani placed first for the team in 46th place, posting his first-ever time in the 17s at the state meet in 17:49. Parker Pape finished in a season-best time of 18:04 in second for the team. Jack Dempsey, Paul Byrnes, Louie Bates, Thomas Freer, and Carlton Diedrich made up the rest of the state team that came in 11th. The team also adopted a new mantra this season of “Run the Mile You’re In.”
