Boys Tennis 2020-2021

After the sudden and devastating cancelation of the 2020 season, the varsity boys tennis team was excited to get back out on the courts in 2021. The season began with six returning players and four new additions. Match play started in February and the War Eagles started strong winning the first four matches. The team had high hopes in the Granger Invitational Tournament in LaGrange, Georgia, but suffered the first two losses of the season to 6A and 7A opponents. The team continued to struggle as they faced five teams that also would play for 2021 State Titles in 2A, 3A, 4A, and 5A. The War Eagles ended one of the toughest regular season schedules with six wins and eight losses.

The War Eagles began post season play in the Region 3 championship match where they defeated Creekside, 5-0, to win their fourth straight Region Championship--their first in class 5A. This win began a dominant postseason state tournament for the War Eagles, where the team would not lose a singles or doubles match. The team defeated Whitewater (4-0) in the first round and Wayne County (5-0) in the second round. In the quarterfinals, the War Eagles defeated St. Pius X (4-0) to advance to the state semifinals. Woodward hosted the state semifinals and defeated North Springs (4-0) to earn their place in the 5A GHSA State Finals at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College.

The War Eagles were looking to claim their first State Championship since 2012 after appearances in 2014 and 2019. In the finals, Woodward faced the Grady Knights, who defeated the War Eagles (3-2) during the regular season. The War Eagles successfully avenged the regular season loss, defeating the Knights 3-0 to claim Woodward’s eighth State Championship Title. Congratulations to our Senior, Stephen Pearson (Captain); Juniors--Myan Ponugoti, Jackson Byars (Captain), and Nate Mechlowitz; Sophomores--Ajay Iyer, Akash Gupta, Namit Miglani, Jack Merrill, and Derek Zhang; and Freshman Eshan Bhimani!
