Dear War Eagle Fans,
Thank you all so much for your support during our excellent winter 2020-2021 athletic season at Woodward Academy! Throughout this season, our student-athletes and coaches for the basketball, wrestling, and swimming and diving teams displayed tremendous heart, perseverance, skill, and tenacity in pursuit of their goals.
This winter, we were ecstatic to watch our girls basketball team win a state championship for the first time since 1999. Our wrestling team moved into the toughest division in the state and finished a strong third as a team, while crowning four individual state champions. We also were proud to add girls wrestling this year, and three members of our inaugural team qualified for the state tournament. The boys basketball team, not content to rebuild the year after their own state championship, finished second in the region and made it to the Sweet 16 of the state playoffs. Finally, our swim and dive teams competed hard, with the boys finishing as the state runner-up and the girls finishing in 12th place.
I’m amazed by the success our student-athletes and coaches had in competition this year given the incredible challenges they faced throughout this pandemic-impacted season. They have all learned tremendous lessons about perseverance and competitive greatness, and I couldn’t be more proud of them.
I invite you to explore this edition of War Eagle Watch, where we’ve shared team recaps for each of our winter varsity sports. We’ve also featured interviews with one of the groundbreaking members of our girls wrestling team, freshman Aneri Patel, as well as record-breaking swimmer, senior Harrison Barnard.
As we finish this unique school year in the coming weeks, I wanted to say again how grateful I am to all of you for allowing us to coach and teach your talented student-athletes here at the Academy. This year has been harder than others, but always, the desire of our student-athletes to compete, learn, and grow as players and people is an inspiration to us all.
Go War Eagles!
