Girls Tennis 2020-2021

The varsity girls tennis team had an exciting and SOARING season this year, despite some of the obstacles and hurdles placed in their way due to COVID! The players and coaches were just so grateful to be having a season after the disappointment of the 2020 season cancelation. The 2021 team finished with a solid overall record of 11 wins, nine losses, and one tie.

Regular season highlights included beating rivals Blessed Trinity (5-0), Starr’s Mill (3-2), and Grady (3-2, Senior Night). In mid-March, the Lady War Eagles competed in the Granger Invitational Tennis Tournament in LaGrange. Playing in Division 1 against 6-A and 7-A schools, the competition level was fierce, but the Eagles gained momentum by the second day of the tournament, picking up a rousing 4-1 win over 7-A Brookwood. Additionally, once again, the team went undefeated in Region play, now six years running! Led by captains Ansley Carpenter (Sr. #1 singles, four-year starter, second-year captain), Kavya Iyer (Sr. #2 singles), and Josette Chun (Jr. #2 doubles), the team swept Forest Park 4-0 to be crowned Region 3 5-A champions!

Entering the State Playoffs as the No. 1 seed, the Lady Eagles remained victorious through three rounds, defeating Harris County 3-0 and Veterans 4-1. In the Quarterfinals (Elite 8), the girls upset reigning State Champion Chamblee 3-2. This match was by far the most arduous yet thrilling one of the season, culminating in a come from behind win in a nail-biting third set tiebreak showdown by the No. 2 doubles team of Josette Chun and freshman Camilla Robinson! Contributing the other match winning points were Shanthi Bernard (Fr. #3 singles) and #1 doubles duo Mythili Kartik (Jr.) and Camille Marinac (Jr.). Advancing to the semifinals (Final 4), they battled tough but lost 1-3 to McIntosh, who went on to win the 5-A state title.
