On January 24, 2024, Woodward Academy’s 78-year long swim and dive program raised more than $12,000 in a single event for cancer research and patient services. The team exceeded its original fundraising goal of $3,500 by 342%. The team's fundraising effort achieved the No. 1 Top National Fundraising Team ranking by more than $9,000. In addition, junior Miles Glee personally raised more than $3,751, making him the current No. 4 national individual fundraiser for Swim Across America (SAA).
Swim-Across-America has raised more than $100 million since 1987. SAA distributes competitive grants annually to its 11 affiliated partners like Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, AFLAC Cancer and Blood Disorders Center, and the Johns Hopkins Cancer Research Center.
During the event, the combined Woodward teams completed continuous 200-yard relays, 15 times. The symbolic drill represents one person who is diagnosed with some form of cancer every 15 seconds in America.
Head Coach Danielle LeFevers and Head Diving Coach Leslie Widener said, “We're so proud of our team, parents, and supporters for exceeding our fundraising goals so far beyond expectations and making such a huge impact with SAA in our first year! We plan to make this an annual tradition.” Swim Across America’s own local organizer, Sarah-Grace Thompson, was equally impressed, “WOW, we are blown away with your team’s support!”
