On August 30, the Woodward Robotics team, known as W.A.Robotics, participated in the Dreaming Out Loud S.T.E.A.M. event, which was sponsored by Lexus and the Mayor’s Office for Film and Entertainment. During this event, motivational speakers Lonnie Johnson, Michael B. Jordan, Mr. Al Smith (Vice President of Toyota North America), Ludacris, and Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms spoke about the importance of pursuing dreams, as well as the difficulties for minorities entering the S.T.E.A.M. related fields. They reminded us that despite these challenges, minorities need to carry on past the systematic oppression and pursue these careers despite the adversities that they may have to overcome.
After hearing the motivational words of these speakers, team 6925 participated in various STEAM activities. The first activity was a demo of Da Bridge Gap. They displayed a fun and innovative way of learning through music. We also participated in an activity to learn about hydraulics. In this activity, we needed to work as a team to lift a can using the hydraulic system.
Not only did this activity help teach us the basic fundamentals of hydraulics, but it also demostrated the importance of teamwork, a quality that team 6925 regards as one of the most important assets in trying to achieve any task. There were a variety of other activities including Virtual Reality, a silent disco, a session about the production line, as well as many others. The highlight of the event was the demo in the actual Lexus from the movie Black Panther.
The takeaway from this phenomenal event was not only the importance of pursuing a career in S.T.E.A.M., but also the importance of pursuing dreams despite any challenges one faces on the path to success. It taught us the importance of dreams and how we should not give up on these dreams just because society tells us to; instead, we need to pursue these dreams at any cost.
