Gene Patterson

Woodward Academy athletics has a strong history of excellence across all areas of sport.  This spring concluded another school year in which Woodward Academy athletic programs excelled at the Region and State Championship level.

The spring saw every Woodward Academy varsity program qualify for their respective state tournament.   In addition, nine different teams captured Region or Area Championships.  The girls lacrosse team finished 7-10 overall and the Area runner-up before being eliminated in the A-AAAAA State Tournament by Whitewater HS.  The boys lacrosse team captured the Area Championship with a 10-7 overall recorded advancing to the A-AAAAA State Quarterfinals before losing to Buford HS.

Woodward’s girls soccer team finished with a perfect 7-0 region record to capture the 4-AAAA Region Championship.  The Lady War Eagles advanced to the AAAA State Quarterfinals where they were defeated by a talented Flowery Branch squad.  The boys soccer team also captured the Region 4-AAAA Championship this spring and advanced to the state quarterfinals as well.  The War Eagles fell in the quarterfinals to the eventual AAAA State Champion Oconee County HS.

The girls tennis team completed a perfect region schedule and then captured the Region 4-AAAA Championship title at the Region Tournament.  The Lady War Eagles advanced to the State Quarterfinals falling to eventual state finalist North Oconee HS.  The boys tennis team finished the 2019 season with an overall record of 14-4 before making a perfect run through the Region 4-AAAA Tournament.  After capturing the region title, the War Eagles advanced all the way to the AAAA State Championship defeating Shaw, Upson-Lee, Denmark and St. Pius X along the way.  Facing a tough North Oconee team, the War Eagles fell to the Titans finishing 2019 as the AAAA State Runner-up.

Woodward Academy’s girls golf team was both the defending Area and AAAA State Champions this year and the Lady War Eagles completed a perfect defense of their titles. The girls team defeated White County in the Area meet before advancing to the State Championships in Columbus, GA.  Competing at Maple Ridge, the Lady War Eagles shot a 2-day total 456 to defeat 2nd place Columbus by 4 strokes and capture the team’s 3rd state championship in 4 years.   The boys golf team also had another outstanding year.  The War Eagles finished as the Area Runner-Up, qualifying them for the State Championships.  Competing at the AAAA Championships at the Columbus Country Club, the War Eagles shot their two best rounds of the year to place 5th overall.

The boys and girls track and field programs continued their dominance of Region 4-AAAA.  Competing on their home track at Woodward’s Timothy J. Hamling Track Complex, the boys and girls teams both captured the Region 4-AAAA Championships.  Both teams would qualify several athletes for the AAAA State Championships in Albany, GA.  The girls team turned in several strong performances to finish 3rd overall at the state meet with the boys team placing 5th overall.

Woodward Academy’s baseball squad played some tough competition in 2019 finishing the regular season with a 21-9 overall record.  The War Eagles dropped just a single game in region play allowing Woodward to capture the 4-AAAA Region Championship.  Advancing to the State Tournament, the War Eagles won both their 1st and 2nd round series before being eliminated in the AAAA State Quarterfinals by Blessed Trinity two games to 1.

This year’s riflery team finished 2019 with a 10-1 record and a runner-up finish at the Area Championships.  The War Eagles defeated Madison County in round one and Buford in the semifinals of the State Championships to earn a spot in the finals at Fort Benning, GA.  Competing against the top shooters in the state, Woodward placed 4th overall just a point out of third.

In a new sport with the GHSA this year, Woodward Academy competed in the inaugural season of eSports with Woodward competing in the League of Legends game.  The team finished the regular season tied atop of the state standings and advanced all the way to the Final Four before being eliminated by the eventual state champion Lambert team.

Combined with the fall and winter, the spring sports conclude a year that saw Woodward Academy send all varsity teams to their respective state tournaments, capture 14 Region/Area Championships, two State Runner-up finishes and three GHSA State Champions.  Woodward Academy once again finished as one of the top overall athletic programs in AAAA with a 4th place finish in the Director’s Cup standings.
