Athletics Update - Spring Playoffs

The spring regular season athletic schedule is rapidly concluding, but several War Eagle teams will be continuing onto the GHSA State Playoffs.

The Woodward baseball squad finished the season with a perfect 14-0 region record capturing the Region 3-AAAAA Championship. The War Eagles will enter the AAAAA State Playoffs as a No. 1 seed hosting No. 4 seed McIntosh in round one. Games one and two of the best of three series begins Wednesday, April 28with game three set for Thursday if necessary.

Both the boys and girls golf squads shot impressive scores to capture the Area 2-AAAAA Championships. Led by Low-Medalist Glover Amick’s 2-under par 70, the boys squad threatened the all-time Woodward team scoring record, shooting a team 5-over par 293. The girls squad captured their 20th area/region title in their 23-year history. Senior Morgan Ellison was Low Medalist with a 2-under par 70 while Junior Aly Francis was runner-up, carding an even par 72. Both teams will compete in the State Championships May 17-18.

The boys lacrosse team finished their 2021 regular season schedule this week with an exciting 9-8 win over rival Lovett. The win secured the No. 3 seed for the War Eagles in the upcoming A-AAAAA State Playoffs. First round state playoff action is set to begin Thursday, April 29.

The riflery squad qualified for the GHSA State Playoffs this season with a strong 8-2 regular season record. The War Eagles defeated Worth County in the State Sectionals 1131-1055 but suffered a 1158-1123 defeat in the State Semifinals to Camden County HS. The loss ended their 2021 season with an overall record of 9-3.

The boys and girls soccer teams finished the 2021 regular season with perfect 7-0 region records, each securing Region 3-AAAAA Championships. The boys entered the AAAAA State Playoffs as a No. 1 seed facing No. 4 seeded Northgate in opening round action. The Vikings took an early 1-0 lead, but the War Eagles settled in and defeated Northgate 6-2. The girls squad, who has taken down no less than four top 10 teams this season, also entered the playoffs as a No. 1 seed. The Lady War Eagles faced a determined No. 4 Whitewater squad from the always strong 2-AAAAA region. In a back-and-forth battle, the Lady War Eagles came out on top 2-0 to advance. The wins move the War Eagle squads onto round two set for April 26-27.

The boys and girls tennis squads are once again making a run at a state title. Both squads captured Region 3-AAAAA titles this season advancing both to the state tournament as No. 1 seeds. Rounds one and two are already in the books with both squads advancing to the State Quarterfinals. The boys team hosted Whitewater in round one and Wayne County in round two with wins of 4-0 and 5-0, respectively. The girls team hosted Harris County in round one followed by Veterans in round two. The Lady War Eagles dispatched Harris County 5-0 and Veterans 4-1. Both squads will host AAAAA Quarterfinal matches at the Shailendra Tennis Complex the week of April 26.

The track and field squads will compete in the Region 3-AAAAA Championships beginning Tuesday, April 27, at Twelve Oaks Stadium. In a season which has seen 11 school records broken, both squads look to be contenders to capture region titles. In addition to the team competition, the top four finishers in each event will advance to the State Sectional Meet scheduled for Saturday, May 8.
