Boys Tennis Captures AAAAA State Championship
Woodward’s Boys Tennis team captured the GHSA AAAAA State Championship over the weekend at the Berry College Tennis Complex, defeating Grady High School 3-0.
The team earned a trip to the state playoffs by capturing the Region 3-AAAAA title earlier this spring. The region title earned the War Eagles one of the #1 seeds for the AAAAA playoffs. Woodward faced a tough 1st round opponent in neighboring Whitewater High School but the War Eagles were able to advance with a 4-0 win. Round two brought Wayne County High School to the Woodward campus where the War Eagles quickly dispatched the Yellow Jackets, 5-0. In the quarterfinals, Woodward was matched up with familiar rival St. Pius X. Once again, the War Eagles rose to the challenge defeating the Golden Lions 4-0 to advance to the state semifinals. Woodward’s final four opponent would be North Springs High School from Region 6-AAAAA. Hosting the visiting Spartans at the Shailendra Tennis Complex, the War Eagles dominated in a 4-0 win to earn a trip to the state finals.
The GHSA state finals were held at Berry College’s gorgeous tennis complex with the War Eagles matched up against familiar foe Grady High School. The War Eagles came out of the gate firing on all cylinders with four of the five lines winning their first set. Junior Jackson Byars earned the first point at #2 singles for the War Eagles with a 6-0, 6-2 win. Sophomore Derek Zhang followed up shortly after with a 6-2, 6-2 win at #3 singles to give Woodward a 2-0 lead. Junior Myan Ponugoti sealed the championship at No. 1 singles with a 6-4, 6-4 win giving Woodward the state title. The No. 1 doubles team of Ajay Iyer and Akash Gupta and the No. 2 doubles team of Namit Miglani and Eshan Bhimani both split their opening sets when the War Eagles captured the title.
The win avenged an earlier season loss to the Knights and gives Woodward Academy Boys Tennis their eighth state title and first since 2012.
