War Eagle Update - Fall Playoffs 2020
Several fall athletic teams wrapped up their seasons over the past couple of weeks while several more look to finish their season strong.
The Woodward Academy volleyball squad captured the Region 3-AAAAA Championship this season with a perfect 7-0 region record. As the region champion, the War Eagles advanced to the AAAAA State Tournament hosting Starr’s Mill High School in the first round. The Panthers came in ranked #9 in AAAAA and defeated the War Eagles 3-1 in a close, hard-fought match. Sophomore Franky Panunzio was named the Region 3-AAAAA Player of the year earning 1st Team All-Region honors with junior Sarai Davis and sophomore Colette Sinkfield. In addition, Junior Elizabeth Yu earned 2nd Team All-Region honors. While the season ended earlier than the War Eagles would have liked, the future appears bright as the squad competed without a senior on the roster. With a host of returning players, Woodward volleyball should be positioned for another successful season next year.
Woodward Academy’s varsity softball team captured their first region title in more than 15 years this season as the War Eagles finished a perfect 12-0 in region play. The War Eagles faced an uphill battle in the first round of the AAAAA State Playoffs as Woodward’s region was aligned with Region 2-AAAAA. Region 2 featured as many as three teams in the top 10 in AAAAA including Woodward’s first round opponent Northside-Columbus. The Patriots, once ranked as high as #4 in AAAAA, eliminated the War Eagles two games to none in the best 2 out of 3 format. Like volleyball, Woodward’s softball squad featured an underclassmen heavy roster with just two seniors. Woodward Academy will enter the 2021-22 season as the favorite to win another region title and make a deeper run in the AAAAA playoffs.
Both the girls and boys cross country teams won the Region 3-AAAAA Championship recently at Locust Grove Middle School. Jack Dempsey who finished as the individual the Region Champion along with Justin Frediani, Elo Agbogu, Thomas Freer, Swen Cain, Aakash Patel, and Louie Bates swept the boys top seven spots to earn a perfect team score of 15. The girls team also earned a perfect team score of 15 as Kenyah Conner, the individual girls champion, Shristi Roy, Wallace Putt, Abbey Miller, Nadia Alavi, and Gabby Hill finished 1-6. Earning Boys All-Region honors were Jack Dempsey, Justin Frediani, Elo Agbogu, Thomas Freer, Swen Cain and Aakash Patel while Kenyah Conner, Shristi Roy, Wallace Putt, Abbey Miller, Nadia Alavi and Gabby Hill earned All-Region honors for the girls squad. Both teams will advance to the GHSA State Championships November 7 at Carrollton Elementary School.
The Woodward Academy football squad has battled through schedule changes to currently sit at 3-0 and tied for first place in Region 3-AAAAA. A slow start saw the War Eagles fall to 0-3 in non-region action, but three consecutive region wins have gotten the War Eagles back on track. While four games remain on the schedule, the War Eagles appear to be a strong contender to capture their 6th region title in the past seven seasons. Woodward will host Forest Park followed by road games at Jonesboro, Tri-Cities, and Creekside to close out the regular season schedule. Football playoffs are set to begin November 27 at the site of the higher region seed.
Woodward Academy’s clay target squad has performed well this fall capturing 1st place at several events. The War Eagles finished first at three separate competitions at the Tom Lowe Trap & Skeet Range. Woodward will compete in the Georgia Independent School Association (GISA) State Championships at the Forest City Gun Club in Savannah November 19-21.
