War Eagle Update - September 2021
The fall athletic season has passed the mid-way point and has featured plenty of action and excitement for Woodward Academy athletic teams. The return of fans to athletic events has been more enthusiastic than anyone could have anticipated. War Eagle fans are excited to be back watching Woodward teams and the War Eagles are primed to battle for Region and State Championships.
After an 0-3 start in the 2020 season, the varsity football team has started very strong in 2021. Woodward is currently 4-0 overall (1-0 in Region 3-AAAAA) and ranked #6 in AAAAA. The War Eagles opened the 2021 season defeating a private No. 1 ranked Eagles Landing Christian 17-14 followed by a 27-0 win over Hapeville Charter. The War Eagles then traveled to rival Marist facing yet another top ranked team. In one of the most exciting finishes in recent years, Woodward scored a touchdown with just under one minute remaining and then stop Marist on the one yard line as time expired to defeat the No. 2 ranked (AAAA) Marist War Eagles 14-9.
Varsity softball was the first to get the 2021 season rolling and the Lady War Eagles have played well in the early going. The team is 15-5 overall and 12-0 in Region 3-AAAAA play. With seven seniors on the roster, the veteran squad appears to be headed for back-to-back Region 3-AAAAA Championships and another appearance in the State Playoffs.
The Woodward volleyball squad, ranked No. 6 in AAAAA, is another team rich with veteran leadership, with nine seniors on this season’s roster. The Lady War Eagles are currently 17-5 overall with key wins over ranked teams, Starr’s Mill and Marist. Woodward recently opened Region 3-AAAAA play sweeping Creekside, Tri-Cities, Banneker, and Drew HS to start 4-0 in the region standings. The team should once again capture the Region Championship and make another run in the AAAAA State Playoffs.
The boys and girls cross country squads have competed in a pair of races so far this season. The boys have recorded 10th and 11th place finishes while the girls have finished 5th and 9th. Both teams will be favorites to win back-to-back Region 3-AAAAA Championships in October.
Woodward’s clay target team has recently started their season and will compete throughout the fall as they prepare for the GISA State Championships in November.
