Woodward Girls Golf Captures AAAAA Championship
The Girls Golf team recently competed in the GHSA AAAAA State Championship Tournament at Green Island Country Club in Columbus, Georgia. The Lady War Eagles qualified for the state tournament by capturing the title at the Area 2-AAAAA meet in late April. The team came out strong in the first day of the two-day tournament. Senior Morgan Ellison shot an even par 73 to lead Woodward Academy and lead the overall tournament by one stroke. Junior Aly Francis was right on Morgan’s heels shooting a first day score of one-over par 74. The Lady War Eagles, with the help of seniors Sophia Morettini and Julia White, held a 16-stroke lead headed into the second round. Northview and Starr’s Mill would make a run at the Lady War Eagles on day two but another even par round of 73 by Morgan, and a solid round by Aly, secured the title for the Lady War Eagles.
The championship gives the Woodward Girls Golf team their third title in a row and fourth in five years. Morgan tied for the tournament Low Medalist with a two-day total even par 146 while Aly finished third overall with a 151.
In addition to the girls championship run, the Woodward Boys Golf team also had a strong showing at the State Championship. The War Eagles, led by junior Wyatt Seilkop’s one-over par 73 and sophomore Glover Amick’s three-over 74, were just two shots behind the lead after the first day of play. A strong showing by St. Pius and Cartersville on day two was too much for the War Eagles to overcome, pushing Woodward to a third place overall finish.
Congratulations to the Lady War Eagles on their state title and to both teams on another outstanding season!
