The NHSCA Nationals, held in Virginia Beach, VA, features the best high school wrestlers from across the nation and is considered one of the most prestigious wrestling events in the country. Woodward Academy juniors Colby McBride, Connor Phillips, Michael Kilic, Gunner Filipowicz, Matthew Singleton, and Ben Valdes competed in the High School Junior class division, eighth-grader Robby De Haven competed in the Middle School division, and freshman Aneri Patel competed in the Girls High School division.
The wrestlers had an impressive tournament and ended up taking home some serious hardware. De Haven finished 3rd at 154 pounds in the Middle School Division while Filipowicz finished as National Runner-Up at 160 pounds in the Junior Division. Kilic and Singleton both finished as National Champions, with Kilic capturing the Junior National title at 145 pounds and Singleton capturing the National title at 170 pounds. In addition, all four place winners also were named NHSCA All-Americans giving Woodward wrestling two national champions, one runner-up, and four All-Americans!
With all of these individuals set to return in 2021-22 season, Woodward Academy wrestling should once again be a contender for both the Dual and Traditional State Championships.
