Boys Basketball Captures Region Championship

Woodward Academy’s boys basketball team captured their 2nd consecutive region title on Friday evening at North Clayton High School.  The War Eagles defeated then #4 ranked Henry County 67-51 to take home the title and #1 seed from Region 4-AAAA.  Junior Jacorrei Turner led the War Eagles with 25 points and 9 rebounds while juniors Will Demorest and Walker Kessler each added 18 and 12 points respectively.  Kessler also added 19 rebounds and 5 blocks on the evening.  Woodward defeated Hampton HS in the first round 72-46 and then defeated Salem 68-66 in the semifinals.

The boys team will now advance to the AAAA State Tournament as the #1 seed from Region 4-AAAA.  The team will play host to Westover High School from Region 1-AAAA on Saturday, February 16th at 6 PM in the opening round of the tournament.  The girls team also qualified for the State Tournament with their 3rd place finish at the region tourney.  The Lady War Eagles will travel to Hardaway HS for their 1st round game on Friday, February 15th.  Tip-off also set for 6 PM. 

In addition to both team’s strong showing at the region tournament, three Woodward Academy players were named to the All-Region Team.  Juniors Walker Kessler and Michael Whitmore were named to the Boys All-Region squad while Freshman Sydney Bowles was named to the Girls All-Region Team.
