Woodward Academy’s boys and girls tennis programs have a rich history of region and state championships and this season has proven to be no different. After both teams sailed through the region tournaments both entered the state playoffs with eyes on another state title.
After capturing the Region 4-AAAA Championship, the boys team advanced to the AAAA State Playoffs. The War Eagles played host to Shaw HS in round one and Upson-Lee in round two, winning both matches 4-0. The boys squad then traveled to Denmark High School for the state quarterfinals. Woodward Academy captured points at #2 singles and #2 doubles with Denmark taking #1 singles and #3 singles. The match came down the #1 doubles point where Denmark and Woodward split the first two sets. The War Eagles continued to battle winning the 3rd and deciding, sending the War Eagles to the state semifinals. In the semifinal match, Woodward Academy hosted rival St. Pius X. While several matches were closely contested, the War Eagles defeated St. Pius without losing a point 3-0, advancing Woodward Academy to the State Championship match. With the GHSA State Championships at Berry College getting rained out, the AAAA State title match was played at the Shailendra Tennis Complex at Woodward Academy. In the finals Woodward Academy faced last year’s AAAA champion North Oconee High School. The War Eagles fought hard at all five matches in front of strong home crowd, but the Titans proved to be too much for the War Eagles, taking the title 3-0. The boys team finish an outstanding 2019 season as the GHSA AAAA State Runner-up as well as the Region 4-AAAA Champion.
In addition, the girls team also advanced to this year’s state playoffs as the Region 4-AAAA Champion. The Lady War Eagles hosted Americus-Sumter in round one winning 3-0 followed by a 3-0 win over Burke County in the Sweet Sixteen. The Lady War Eagles fell in the quarterfinals to the eventual AAAA State Champion Marist War Eagles to end another outstanding season.
