War Eagle Update - December 2019

The 2019 fall season is in the books and Woodward Academy athletic teams turned in another exciting season.  Now the page turns to War Eagle Winter sports and Woodward Academy is off to one of the strongest starts in recent memory.

Woodward Academy’s wrestling squad is the defending 2018-19 AAAA Dual State Champion as well as the AAAA Traditional State Champion.  The War Eagles look determined to defend their state titles again in 2019-20 as Woodward has already captured several tournament titles.  The team currently has a 7-1 dual meet record capturing 1st place at both the Early Bird Duals and the Buford Invitational.  Woodward’s most impressive performance to date however, occurred at the annual Southern Slam Tournament at Eastside High School in South Carolina, a tournament featuring nearly 50 wrestling teams.  The War Eagles brought home the team championship trophy and several top individual finishes.  Nick Master (132 pounds), Michael Kilic (138 pounds) and Vincent Mannella (145 pounds) each captured 1st place in their respective weight class.  Matthew Singleton captured 2nd at 160 pounds while Malachi Wiley took 3rd at 170 pounds.  In addition, senior Nick Masters was selected as Overall Outstanding Wrestler for the entire tournament.  The War Eagles will attend several major out of state competitions over the holiday break competing in New Orleans, LA, Kissimmee, FL and Clovis, CA before hosting the Area Duals in early January.

The boys basketball squad is picked by many to be a leading favorite to contend for the AAAA state title this season and their start to the season has done nothing to change those expectations.  Opening the year ranked #1 in AAAA, the boys squad went 13 straight games before suffering their first defeat.  The War Eagles are 12-1 overall and 5-0 in Region 4-AAAA.  The highlight of the season to this point was the War Eagles trip to the Kevin Brown Memorial Tournament of Champions in Washington, Illinois.  Woodward Academy stormed through the Thanksgiving tournament capturing the National Classic Championship with a perfect 4-0 record defeating nationally ranked Millennium High School (Goodyear, AZ) in the championship game.  University of North Carolina commit Walker Kessler was the tournament MVP and named to the All-Tournament Team along with junior Will Richard.

Woodward Academy’s girls basketball squad is off to one of their best starts in school history.  The Lady War Eagles are currently undefeated with a 10-0 overall record, 5-0 in Region 4-AAAA play.  The girls squad have already defeated #8 ranked Druid Hills and #2 ranked Luella High School making a statement they are a contender in 2019-20.  They Lady War Eagles, who recently moved up to #3 in AAAA, are led by Sophomore Sydney Bowles who is averaging nearly 29 points per game but have also gotten strong contributions from both Junior Kia Lanier (13.3 points/game) and Sara Lewis (9.7 points/game).

The boys and girls swimming & diving squads have traditionally turned in solid campaigns each year and this season appears to be no different.  The boys squad is currently 3-1 in dual meet format action and recorded a 4th place finish at the Atlanta Kickoff Classic in early November.  The girls squad is currently 2-2 in dual meet action and placed 6th at the Atlanta Kickoff Classic.  The War Eagles will compete at the annual Metro City Championships in January before competing for a state title at State Championships in early February.
