Seventh-Grader Leads Literacy Initiative at Local School
Seventh-grader Ben Soshnik recently organized a special reading project to prepare for his upcoming Bar Mitzvah. Ben purchased more than 120 copies of The Magician's Hat for the first graders at Harper-Archer Elementary School, distributed the books, along with Woodward friends Katie Weathersby, Ellison Baer, and Jay Kapadia, and led the reading program that accompanies the book.
Ben, who struggled with reading in kindergarten and first grade, was interested in identifying a service project that encouraged young kids to see the importance of reading. He partnered with the Share the Magic Foundation and Read with Malcolm program.
Read with Malcolm is a youth literacy initiative founded in 2015 by University of Georgia wide receiver, Super Bowl Champion, and literacy advocate Malcolm Mitchell. The mission of Read with Malcolm is to transform the lives of young students through literacy. The organization’s goals are to introduce book ownership to students in households where reading is not a priority and to improve literacy in schools with below grade-level reading skills.
