Upper School Debate Team Earns 2nd Place in Tourney
Sophomore Ashna Ghanate and senior Sam Wombough finished second at the Billy Tate Southern Bell Forum at Montgomery Bell Academy (MBA). Hosted annually since 1983, MBA is one of the most challenging tournaments of the season and the first "major" competition of the second semester.
After clearing as the 16th seeded team, Ashna and Sam defeated two of the top three ranked teams in the country before losing to Highland Park from Dallas in the finals. This is the fourth time that Woodward has reached the finals at MBA (previously occurring in 1998, 2006, 2018, and 2020).
Senior Nishita Ghanate and junior Sachi Reddy also cleared to elimination rounds at the forum, defeating Westwood in the octafinals before losing to Whitney Young in the quarterfinals.
Ashna and Sam and Nishita and Sachi have become the 19th and 20th teams from Woodward to clear at MBA in more than 30 years of attendance. Only eight schools have cleared two teams at the forum since they allowed second team entries in 2014, and Woodward is one of only three schools to accomplish this feat twice.
