Finding Your Way, Guided by Heart Connections
Your child will be greeted every day with smiles, hugs, and laughter at our Primary School. They’ll learn and grow in the warm embrace of a community of caring and dedicated teachers, principals, and counselors.
One of our teachers described a fundamental element of the learning process at Woodward as “making heart connections.” We believe those kinds of connections are why our preK to third graders thrive. Your child will be surrounded by classmates who represent the beautiful diversity of our world, learning to respect and value each other's differences. The Woodward Way begins at our Primary School by honoring, loving, and nurturing what is special in every student.
Respecting ourselves, each other, our school and our world is the Woodward Way.
STEAM
Starting in prekindergarten, your child will learn skills like computer literacy, coding, robotics, and digital citizenship. Our STEAM specialists meet with students weekly and collaborate with your child’s teacher to integrate technology into social studies, science, and language arts. The Collaboratory, located in the heart of our Primary School Library, is our center for STEAM learning. It’s where your student will invent, create, and code and learn to think critically, analyze data, understand connections, and work together to problem-solve.
Respecting Ourselves & Others
Woodward is Atlanta at its very best, with diversity in all its forms present here, but we believe that it’s not enough merely to be diverse in our demographics. Your child will learn to embrace all that is special about themselves while respecting and valuing the differences in others. Your child will love seeing themselves and their families in our curriculum and in library books like Make Way for Dyamonde Daniel, My Dadima Wears a Saree, and Stella Diaz Has Something to Say. We also engage in service projects throughout the school year, teaching the importance of giving back to others.
Extracurriculars
At the Primary School, your student can explore a wide array of activities both during and after the school day. They can stay after school for free intramural sports, or join classmates in extracurriculars during afterschool care, which is open until 6 p.m. Our parents really like the convenience of having school and activities like chess or robotics in one place.
Transition Learning Support Program
Our strength is our diversity, and that includes differences in learning styles. The Transition Learning Support Program offers the same curriculum as grade-level peers, but with more specialized instruction in smaller classes, to bright, creative students with challenges in reading (dyslexia), written expression (dysgraphia), math (dyscalculia), language, areas of processing, executive function, or attention. Learners with a specific diagnosis from a private or school psychologist can join our Transition classrooms in the second or third grade. Experienced, specialized teachers will give students the tools and strategies to convert different learning challenges into confidence, social and emotional stability, and academic success.
“We love the supportive and nurturing environment of the Primary School. The teachers truly know each of our kids, and it's evident how much they care about their success." Todd Miller father of four Woodward students

Ms. Baugh believes there are some special things that set Woodward apart from other schools
When third grade teacher Audrey Baugh joined Woodward Academy in 2016 after relocating from Washington, D.C., she brought with her a great depth of experience, having taught at five schools in the D.C. and Atlanta areas. While each school had its own unique community culture, and she grew as an educator through all of her experiences, Ms. Baugh believes there are some special things that sets Woodward apart from other schools.
At the Primary School, we create a sense of family, a home away from home where your child can learn, grow, and discover. It’s where they will learn to read and write, make friends, and to understand and appreciate the world outside themselves. With gentle encouragement, our caring and dedicated teachers will foster a spark of curiosity—and help it grow—in your child.
Elementary students recently participated in the Georgia Independent Homeschool (GIH) Technology Competition.
Second-grader Lyra W. and third-grader London P. and their soccer team, advanced to the finals in the NASA Tophat Soccer tournament.
Third-grader Leo D. spent part of his summer training at FC Barcelona.
